Poor old OP: I am feeling somewhat sorry for him. Still, if he ever needs a locksmith...

He needs an editor more than he needs a locksmith.

This thread is not about keys, of any description. Besides, the Minute Man takes three working days.

Despite the fantastic irreverence of this thread, it's one I actually have a personal interest in The car key fairies which only come out when we're asleep spirited off the main remote key for our 2005 RAV 4. I was told that it would cost $800 to replace. We've just been running on a single chipped non-remote key since then and understand that even this will cost $200 to replace. Anyone been in a similar position and found a more economical way round it?

Become the car remote fairy and sell the keys back to the industry. They can sell them back to the owners at a one off price, just because they're nice.

    Buy from overseas.
Get it programmed to your car (or in the case of EWS style systems it comes programmed to you car after supplying the VIN)
Sometimes you can find the info on how to program it yourself

Never, ever go to the dealer. The price they ask is more than taking the piss, it's more than rude too.

Hey, thanks for the thought - have just checked eBay and need to do more research but the difference in price is night and day - effing outrageous in NZ, straight price gouging. Cheers and much appreciated
