Riding through K Road & Queen Street in the CBD: Warning!

    Hi Guys,

    Firstly let me introduce myself:
My name is Wassem. I've been into riding for the past few years now, and was psyched when I purchased my new Ninja a few months back.
I have a lot of friends that ride so every weekend we would ride out past whitford and they would show me tips along the way.
I also used it to commute to work and back every day (living out east to working in the CBD)

On april 12th I was returning home from work. As my usual route; I went down K' Rd to catch the motorway on Symonds street.
I was riding around 50km/h going past the junction of K' rd and Queen street. As I was going through the intersection I had a car cut me off and turn down Queen street (I had a green light).
I shook my head and the driver waved as to say sorry. I looked straight back onto the road and another car tail gated him and I had a few seconds to react.
Long story short I hit him dead on, smashing the windscreen with my helmet and flying over the car, was knocked out cold.

All in total I was woken up by people all around me, was taken to the side and blacked out again. Details are real sketchy.
My bike is a total ride off, I was In hospital for a week and a half, suffering spinal tissue damage, dislocated shoulder, broken bones and ripped ligaments down my leg and foot.

After the CCTV footage was given to the cops, they found the first car had ran an orange light, and the second car had run a red light (give way to turn right down queen street).

I don't want anyone to go through what I had to. It's been 8 weeks now and I still have trouble walking on my leg and have shoulder damage.

PLEASE PLEASE.. take your sweet time when going through that intersection. Till now I see cars cutting other cars off.
Slow down around that junction and flash your high-beams on if you have to when you pass, so no cars go and turn in front of you.

Even though I had a bright green Kawi bike, the idiot never looked properly

Sorry to hear about your injuries. But I can't understand this bit... So if the first driver that "cut you off" only went through an orange...how could you've gone through a green? Am I missing something?

The turning traffic should have given way to him as he was going straight though. Pretty busy intersection at the best of times.
Sympathies for the injuries bro. I hope you recover

    haste to health homie.

i would not flash my lights at an aucklander, though, they might think you're giving them ROW...and TBH, treat it like all of them are out to kill you. half of them through ignorance, the other half through malice. the other half are women and shouldn't be driving anyway.

    Ha yes to those who are confused;

It was a solid green light on my side, I was just passing through along with the traffic.
People are too rushed to get to their destination a few minutes earlier.

Thank you to those who have commented before, I am slowly recovering. Lucky I was wearing my gear when it all happened.

And yeah, next time I'll know to always keep my eye on the road instead of getting frustrated at drivers

Yeah I'm not sure how some people have passed their license tests to be on the road. Exactly a week after, a cyclists was hit and killed on the same intersection, same position as me. Was going straight and a car failed to give way to him. I just want to let everyone know that intersection is troublesome and to be careful

Some of us can't afford the luxury of a car or road legal motorbike, so we don't all have a choice in how we travel.
