Can I borrow a torque wrench in Christchurch area?

Hello guys,

I've been trying to adjust the chains on 07 ZX10R, but before I make any move the manual says rear axle bolt needs to be tightened to 80 ft lb after it's done. Since I don't have a torque wrench and I have no clue how tight that is, can someone in Christchurch area help me out with a torque wrench?

I've got one, out norf CH so depending on what part of town you are someone may be closer.

As a rough guide, 80lbf is my skinny arm just starting to shake pulling on the end of my 1/2" drive power bar.

Yup, there's a reason why most bikes tool kits include a short handled axle nut spanner. I've never used a torque wrench on mine.

Front axle nut on the saab 900 I used to have was 150lb, I figured 2' power bar and my roughly 75kg standing on the end of it was about right.

My thoughts exactly on the axle nut, ive never used a torque wrench either.

So all it really needs is to be just tight enough?

Is it like how Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay never measures how much olive oil they put in their cooking?

Should be , if it comes with the short handle, that way you cant over do it (usaually)

The compensator nut on my bike has to be done to 250 ft.lbs which is a bugger.

150 lbft?

75kg = 165 lbs

Torque = Force x radius
Torque = 165lbs x 2 ft = 330 lb ft .......over double the recomended torque, not good for your bolts.
Stand halfway down the bar and you'll be much closer

Buy a spring scale (10 bucks on trademe) more accurate than any <$100 torque wrench and can be used with any tool (spanners, crescents, allen keys etc) and it's useful range is much greater.

Say your spanner is 1.2 ft long, and you want 80 ft lb.

T = Fr
F = T/r
F = (80 ft lb)/ (1.2 ft) = 66.7 lb

Pull your spanner with your spring scale (make sure it's at a right angle to your spanner) when it reads 67 lb you're done.

If your required force is out of the range of your scale, extend or shorten the lever arm length and recalculate your force value.

Check the accuracy of your scale with a known mass, I check mine against a 10 l bucket of water (~10kg).

If the bolt is positioned so you can't pull at a right angle to the spanner, pull at 45 degrees and multiply your calculated force value by 1.4
(the force value for any angle is given by (force)/(sin(angle)) )

give it ya best relaxed nudge then a wee shunt more, done
