    Well, no. Fare payers only pay a third of the cost of public transport. The balance is shared equally between ratepayers and taxpayers. That's for the whole service, not for individual rides as well. Some services are horrendously expensive on a passenger/kilometre basis, particularly the off-peak services.

    I know very little about public transport but I use the trains daily.

    BUT - most of the day in the central city the place is full of huge busses tearing about either empty or as good as empty. Its bloody silly given the space required for the damn things...

    Sigh...

    I guess that like everything - its complicated...

    More like wishful thinking...

    I was kinda stunned when I first found out the price of a local ticket. Daily it's $6.50 each way, or you could get a weekly for $50 (ish) saving $15(ish). Must ask the missus what her monthly costs so I guess they were due for a price hike.
