Hah yeah, from what I've read it's doable on a sport bike. Although apparently the inlet crossings can be.. interesting.
A mate of mine did it awhile back in a group that included an SV650/1000 and a Buell of some sort. They did it fine 2 up with gear as well so it can't be that hard!
One of the guys has a GoPro so we should get some decent videos to post up. I just love the idea of blasting past a tourist bus full of people on the beach riding a sport bike!
This I have to see!I feel a touch of ebola coming on that weekend.
Quite a few moons ago "Rocket" Ron Kirkman used to use the beach to set up his hillclimb quad & a bloke oop north used to speed test his GSXR 1000 turbo. T'is doable but fairly nutty.
Oh, check your tides............ That's a biggie. You want to be hitting the beach with the tide going out, preferably halfway out.
Manopausal.
Haha, I hear ebola runs it's course in three days. Modern medicine and whatnot
Speed testing on the beach eh? Well that gives me confidence that I'm not going to plough into some soft sand and go flying!
Ah yes, tides.. don't really want to get trapped. Flexible timetable allows for quite a bit of on the go planning so shouldn't be a problem.
Don't forget they got local knowledge, plenty of pitfalls to be found. The beach changes with every tide.
I still ain't ridden it. Bit of butt pucker thinking about getting my lard arse through the soft sand to get on & off, the bike that is. On or off at Te Paki stream is tickety boo but the other access points are Saharan.
Manopausal.
It'd be about 4 hours from Waipu to the entrance on to the beach with no stops, so if that works with the tides and whatnot then it'd be doable. But that'd be a pretty tight timetable to get it all done on that day even if the tide times are favourable.
It's about 5 hours from Waipu to Cape Reinga, so if we did that in a day we'd have Sunday to come back down ninety mile beach and you'd be able to get home on Sunday night for work on Monday.
That'd give us a bit more flexibility with managing tide times and stuff cause we wouldn't have to factor in the 4 hour travel time to get there.
Sunday for 90 mile sounds good then. I need to get on trying to find a rack.

That was us and yes it is doable on any bike. The inlet crossings are just something you need to slow down for. Going north up the beach is definately the best option as you get a free car wash at Te Paki stream.
It would be a 2.5hr ride from waipu to waipapakauri beach access nonstop. Going on the fact that it takes me 1hr 40min in my ute from south whangarei to coopers beach and then 20min from there to kaitaia.
Say hi to Sergei for us!
Only a Rat can win a Rat Race!
how far to the nearest petrol station from 90 mile?
