Edgecumbe was along that route too ... how did you miss that .. ??
......many travellers don't use this route UNLESS their going to Gisborne/opotiki and even then most still stick with the main sign posted route which detour these two places...the gas station owners/attendants are a couple of unaccomadating stingy mean spirited moneygrubbers-had a similar encounter years ago-flash a gain of cash and they will compromise, untill then.......

Would have thought a glass V bottle would still be ok?

    So does facebook..

I have run out a few times so far, no fuel gauge in my bike so have to keep a track of kms. So far all good though.

Another good idea instead of a small length of hose is a 1.5 litre Primus fuel bottle. They are often filled with white gas for running a multi-fuel stove, but can hold pretty much any liquid fuel including petrol. You would put about 1.35l of petrol in because you need to leave an air gap, but that is enough to take you about 20km or so.

This is what they are designed for:

But some use them like this:

    Never again....
I haven't had anyone wanting to fill my bike for me in the last 5 years - it must just be a couple of unusual places you have been to.

Never had anyone want to fill the bike up. Wouldn't let 'em either.

Have had to rescue folks who have run out of petrol in cars a few times. Always been able to borrow a can, or leave the full price deposit to be refunded when I brought it back. Once the servo had no spare so he cracked open a new one. All of these have been in Wellington as well!

Company policy is usually no lending cans as the vast majority are never seen again.
As a CSR I get abused on a regular basis because of company policies/product prices/NZ laws etc. but it's water off a duck's back to me.I find that wishing the wanker dishing the abuse to "Have a great day" in a cheery voice really gets up their nose.
We are not allowed by law to fill any container that is not approved for the job and can switch on or off any pump by computer to stop it happening.

The Edmund road automart here in Rotorua, is a bit old fashioned, there are people in the forecourt at all times, offering to fill vehicles and whatnot.
I always fill my own, but I do appreciate them offering.
Heck, I can remember going there as a kid with Dad in the old Rodeo.
One greasy Diesel pump out the back.
80c a litre, by memory, haha.

Good to see that the sense of entitlement and the lack of responsibility for ones own actions or inaction is still alive and well

I wonder if you can fill a 1 litre meths bottle, you could then tip out the said meths into the approved drain (or consume if so inclined) and fill with more flammable liquid of the desired kind
These aren't the bikes we're looking for....

Apart from the lack of a loan can.....you and your mates deserve every bit of fire you get on you when you try and fill up dodgy containers with gas.
There is a reason why petrol containers are expensive.......and it's not because they have the word petrol written on them.

Why don't you park up the R1 and go back to banjo playing. Or better yet - not send all the crap in the bottom of your tank through the fuel injection system.

The lids while look metal, have a plastic insert......which melts on contact to petrol. Only certain plastics at certain thicknesses don't melt.

Hang on a minute--SOMEONE fucked up by running out of gas. They inconvenienced their riding buddies. They diddn't have a clue how to do a safe easy bike to bike fuel transfer. They were OFFERED a solution for THEIR mistake and refused it.
How is this anybody elses fault?

If it was me I'd be so red faced over screwing up Ida accepted the $35.00 charge as penance for MY MISTAKE.
