I spent some time working on a USAFE base during GWII. There is no one more paranoid and no one that takes their job more seriously than the military, everything is a threat to them.
A large aircraft losing its transponder signal then making a major course deviation would be enough to wake the base commander of whatever station or vessel noticing.

Well the truth is starting to come out now, wonder how the saga will end...

If it was such a threat ... Why didn't they watch it to see where it went. My guess is .. it passed by/avoided them ... and they lost interest/contact.

That's an interesting proposition - but who are you suggesting the players are? And what's their game?

If you're suggesting (and I know I'm making a leap here because I'm not really sure) that it's a false-flag type situation intended to give China the mandate for an assault of some sort - who would they need an excuse to attack? The nations that they have enmity with (Japan, Taiwan) are hardly likely to pull a hijacking manoeuvre, and it's not like China would need something of this level as a justification for further imposing upon the Uighurs.

On the other hand if you mean it is a legitimate attack on China - who would go about it in this fashion?

I think that the actual claim of responsibility from the Uighurs has possibility. They have a large number of ex-pat fighters based in Pakistan and the plane could have been redirected that way and failed mid-flight for some reason. Or been shot down by some govt who are now desperately trying to cover it up.

Either way - it's gonna make some conspiracy theorists some good cash in dodgy book sales.

Perhaps not an opening gambit to war, but IF china decides to "help" in the search, then moving some people onto a remote island (which might or might not be part of a claim of all of the south china seas) and then "forgetting" to remove those people after the "search" has been concluded...
