We had to explain to my girlfriends son that "nigger" was an offensive word and shouldn´t be used - he has grown up in Spain and Spanish schools and only learnt the word through you tube, radio and "vines" - he couldn´t understand that black people found it offensive and then used it themselves so extensively.

I find it slightly amazing that Kiwi's find it so hard to understand that a group might use a derogatory word to describe them or others of their group and it's OK, but for someone else not of that group to use it to describe them is insulting.

Do you ever call your mates cunts, wankers, or dirty whores? How would you or they react to a stranger calling them that?

We have a culture here of using words that might be deemed extremely insulting against our friends, but by the same token bump into a stranger in the street and call him a fucking cunt and he is likely to swing for you, despite the fact his mates may have called him that multiple times that day already.

The above is a massive simplification and James Duece already said it way better, but it might help to explain why people of colour can call themselves nigger and white people cannot.

I don't believe Clarkson used it to be insulting and think it was a slip of the tongue which I have to confess I have to consciously avoid when using the eny miny moe rhyme. As others have said the person releasing it is the one that should be jumped on!

I don't understand how Jay-Z and other rappers can say the "N" word constantly and they get paid massive amounts, women throw themselves at them and they get idolised on tv. I say it once at a football match and get sent home. One rule for the rich and another for the poor. When will this hypocracy end?

James2 and oneofsix have it right. He mumbled "eeeny meeny myknee mo" etc... The lines were not even included in the show.

There are people these days, mostly it seems from one part of the political spectrum, who want anything or anyone they object to taken off TV immediately.
Me? I just change the bloody channel.

Both of Clarkson's colleagues defended him, words to the effect that he isn't a racist, he's just an idiot. But we already knew that.
