To be fair he has got a point. Unless your changing lanes or worried about getting rear ended brain time is probably better spent looking ahead. Never had a problem with tucking elbows in and a head check even if mirrors are a bit wobbly its enough to know something is there or not. I don´t see the point in the rear view lense in the helmet - it still must have a fairly big blindspot for overtaking vehicles and would still need a shoulder check to clear the blindspot.
