Well that was the best nights racing for a long time. Was in Wellywood visiting family till today, so have been staying away from the net in case i heard the result. That was anyones race for the last few laps!
Damn glad JL is back and Rossi got 2nd in the championship.
Thinking Honda might be a little disappointed in DP tho?
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

Haven't heard this years vintage but... Before I went to Phillip Island the first time (RC211V era) lots of people told me, "They are really loud".
I was thinking, "Well what would you expect?" Then when I heard them, "Fuck they're loud!"

Didn't notice much difference in 2008.

Since that HRC have changed their exhaust manufacturer from MIVV to Termignoni but I suspect a quieter exhaust was not particularly a design priority.

I'm supposed to be wearing hearing aids which leads me to wonder, have you had a hearing test?

Oh yes they fucking are! Some tracks you're far enough away from them that they're bearable without ear plugs. But some places like Laguna Seca where you get real close to them it feels as if your ears are gonna bleed.

So looking like you get punched in the face all the time isn't due to your mouth, it's your cock.

There are some interesting philosophies concerning engine noise, my favourite is by Ulrich Baretzky who developed the famous, quiet engine for the Audi R10 Le Man Prototype.

Ulrich Baretzky said "Noise is a form of energy, the less you hear means the more you use [in] propulsion."

Which is perhaps a little easier (or harder, depends how you look at it) for Ulrich who can slap a custom turbo on the Audi and use that kinetic to squash some air.

Aside from meeting a maximum noise (dB) criteria I would suggest that efficiency of the engines is a design priority and that a quieter exhaust is a product of that.

Further, I would suggest the satellite Honda's are louder because they may lack the technology in some part of the system that blocks them from taking advantage of the higher efficiency/quieter exhaust system.

Entirely conjecture though, a MotoGP race is considerably shorter than 24 hours, hence the gain in efficiency of such a system may be irrelevant.

I think it was in the movie "Faster" they discuss exhaust noise. One of the manufacturers (Ducati?) discovered that a virtual straight through exhaust still complied with the required db limit so they adopted such a system. As soon as they did that, everyone else followed suit.

Might be about time to give that another watch, been any other vids made along the same lines since?

One of their riders (Rossi?) insisted on mufflers IIRC so for a while they all had them.

Rossi said he didn't like the loss of back pressure/engine braking?

I've been told the famous under seat exhaust was primarily to feed exhaust gasses into the intake of a rival bike.

Might have been Honda vs Ducati? Slightly before my time in motorcycles, I'm sure someone here can correct me.
