I knew many people who put their own bikes there and had them stolen by the US Government!

Well........Confronted with documentary evidence of a GCSB program called SPEARGUN to tap the Southern Cross Cable and spy on all our international internet traffic, Key declassified and released documents relating to a completely different GCSB spying program. SPEARGUN is about tapping cables. Key's CORTEX is about using off-the-shelf software to protect select government departments and key businesses from malware. There's no relation between the two.

But also true is we have an NSA outpost here at the exchange and of course we have an information sharing agreement with them. Its a bit like a Gang having someone beaten up by their prospects or associates. Technically the gang didn't do the crime but the job gets done. And that's exactly what happens here.

So to think that the govt wouldn't use/access that is not believeable.
and why does an internal US security service have an outpost in NZ? - are we now just a complete vassal state of the USA? There is the cynical flippant "yes" answer, but, it is totally unacceptable any way you want to put it, and for a government to allow this would have been considered Treason, in earlier times! As it is, they are breaking New Zealand law. They need to be arrested and prosecuted. If convicted, they need to be jailed, deported, and their equipment and buildings seized as instruments of crime.
We should not allow foreign spies to break the law here. Its that simple. Stopping them is supposed to be the GCSB and SIS's job. If they permit it, or turn a blind eye, we can only conclude that they don't work for us anymore and that they need to be shut down.

And the email, don't think dotcom would be fooled by a fake one, the guy is in the IT business after all.
    - quite true.

Govts have spied on their people for generations, we all know that and it doesn't bother me. ...........
and that makes it right and acceptable? The current level of spying on their people is now something the Stasi could only have dreamt about. Yes, there is a case for "keeping an eye on the odd person", but, mass surveillance of the sort now being utilised is neither necessary nor ethical. The fact that it doesn't bother you is also disturbing, in that, if you are prepared to accept this level of surveillance, what are you ultimately prepared to accept - and why do you accept it? Nothing to hide so nothing to worry about. You aren't alone in this - it is rather disturbing the number of people who are quite prepared to be spied on in this way....only collecting metadata......it's still "being spied on", and we have a right to have some privacy in our lives. When it becomes legal for us to go trawling through all the MP's emails, phone calls, etc, etc, then maybe, but until then........

Of course it bothers us/me that all this is going on but there is nobody any different seriously offering to change it back they are only interested in changing it slightly to suit their own requirements, so better the devil you know etc.

The whole fucking world is spying on itself because the technology to do it is abundant and all around us!

There is no difference between this bullshit left and right politics they are all the fucking same and ultimately dancing to the same tune!

By arguing with one another over that we are simply playing into their hands by distracting ourselves from the real issues!

This fiasco is nothing more than a sideshow circus act meanwhile the main act just carries on unchecked regardless!

Actually my grandfather was like that. He could have a discussion with someone, but before and after it, he'd churned on it so many times, he was convinced it played out according to his version...

He was also in the hacking business. Pretty easy to create a forged email. With the resources available to KDC I can't see it being too hard to forge with the appropriate dates, paths and return address. Of course it's even easier for John Key and Warner to say it's a fake.
