There's probably not many people still alive who took part in the American Civil War.

However, there are plenty of gang members alive out there today if you actually had an interest in the subject.

I suspect you lack the balls to carrying out any face to face research though.

The dates were to illustrate a point about using text books. The history of gangs extends to a bit more than just New Zealand and fyi the Hells Angels were started in the 1950s. That's a while ago too and it's probably a bit hard to talk to those guys now.

Why would I need face to face research anyway? I'm not writing a book like Professor Gilbert did.

That's an interesting question. (Yes, for my sins I do work in academia ... and yes I do use books in my classes) My original point was that you'd probably read books about gangs - which are usually very wrong in most aspects ... and so you had bugger all knowledge about the 1%er MCs. Your categorization of them as "scum" also got up my nose a bit ... which didn't help.

In terms of your question, it depends on what is being taught - from what perspective. If it is historical, then there is plenty written about the US Civil War from that perspective - same for a Sociological or Social Anthropology approach (the long-term results of the US Civil War are quite fascinating ...) then those present no issues.

If, however, someone tried to teach about what it was like to be there at the time, then yes, current teachers have no experience and so can't teach that ...

I'm sure many of them were fathers, sons, uncles, husbands ... maybe even grandparents ...

"Nice" is a relative term. I'm sure NONE of them want to live up to your standard of "nice"

And I'm sure there are many people now grieving their deaths ...

There's a lot of "I'm sure"s in your post. I seriously doubt you know all that for sure. They'd probably still be alive if they weren't what they were.

How can anyone believe another when what they're saying is not 100% correct. Anything less than that 100% threshold is either just an opinion or a conspiracy.

My response "And like I give a fuck whether you believe me or not???? " relates to this:

Now - I know for a fact that they will all be someone's son ... and some of them will have children .. so they are fathers ... some of them will have partners (married or otherwise) so they are husbands ... if they have brothers and sisters then a good chance some will be uncles ...

And I'm also sure there will be people grieving their deaths ...

I didn't say ALL of them were ALL of those ...

So, if Gadget chooses to doubt then that's his problem, not mine ..

It applies to all the dead soldiers, fighter pilots, navy people killed in action, bikers killed in road accidents ... firemen killed on the job ... old people (if they weren't old they wouldn't die ...) dead pedestrians (they wouldn't be dead if they hadn't tried to cross the road at the wrong time ...) ...

I was posting about 1%ers, ie: the outlaw gangs, ie: the guys killed at Waco recently.

And they let you teach people. Ffs!
