Windows 10

Anyone tried this yet? We have a new laptop that has been put away until something easier to understand than Wins' 8 comes along. If 10 is going to be easier to operate than 8 I might give it a go. Microsoft are offering a free upgrade for a year. I'm not sure whether to upgrade now, or wait and see what gremlins are hidden within Win 10.

I'm going to get the upgrade and install it onto one of the unimportant PCs to see what its like. I've only got win 7, no 8 or 8,1 and a couple of Macs.

Of course it will be interesting to see what happens a few years down the tracks, does the free upgrade now require an ongoing subscription or what? I think I read somewhere that this is MS future game plan

Won't bother playing with it until an actual release and as usual, not a primary device (work laptop has 7 for work, 8.1 for testing etc, so that will be replaced with 10).

Re the free upgrade, reports/interviews with Microsoft it's for the life of that device, ie, they expect it will only last x number of years.

Well I think that's their hope... still to be proven. But as their profits are dropping due to the PC market dropping in favour of smartyphones & tablets they gotta try something; tho that something is also seeing their services packed onto Android devices by default

If you're not using the lappie anyway, there is no reason not to upgrade to give it a try.

I think because 7 is such a good OS, and the tile interface of 8 such an in your face change, it has been hard for them to get people to upgrade. Going from 8-10 shouldn't be much of an issue though.

Following their tick-tock (shit-not) release schedule 9 was supposed to be the good one, guess I'll have to wait for 11

They are bringing the left bottom corner Start Menu back. Other than that I don't have any complaints using Windows 8/8.1 (I do like the new additional Windows Explorer and Task Manager functions).



Also Windows 10 will have switchable "workspace" function. Looking forward to that.

Does linux have popular and useful programs yet?

Until then I think I'll get by using windows to SSH into linux.

Angstrom with qt4embedded is pretty sweet though; still need msvc2015 to develop the good shit and cross compile it though.

So I've upgraded the test partition on my work laptop from 8.1 to 10 (still using 7 for all my actual work, the test is for checking an issue a client might have, checking how something works etc).

Got off to a stellar start... see the highly descriptive error attached I had to swear allegiance and location to USA (language and locale) before things got moving. Proceeded in reasonable fashion, although the high spec SSD would have helped there. It handled the dual boot fine, even updating the Win8 boot label to Win10 which was a nice touch. It did default to 10 as the boot option, so I turned it back again.

After testing it for a few minutes, much improved over 8 (not saying much there) and worse than 7 (not surprised). They spent a lot of time making a gorgeous looking wallpaper, then gave us crappy icons for Recycle Bin and This PC along with the "trendy" flat appearance which is horrible. Touch not tested as laptop doesn't have it.

Search should be re-labelled "hahanotfindingshit". Trying searches for basic stuff like... I dunno, Windows, Update, Region, Locale finds nothing, but it does want to look through my stuff? 7 had a very nice feature where you can search for basic stuff like lid, icons, and be prompted for "Choose what closing the lid does" and "Show or Hide common icons on the desktop". It meant you didn't have to dig through the Control Panel for an option and could go straight there. Incidentally, there is no option in 10 in the Control Panel it seems to list the options out, instead forcing categories (could choose either in 7) so you first have to think like Microsoft to find what you're looking for...

Anyway, no plans to use 10 in production, but I can show clients if they're interested... I'm surprised at the number of consumers leaping to upgrade, but then, they've been forced into buying 8 for a few years (we've kept supplying 7 and I just purchased two more laptops a week ago and continued to buy with 7 installed) so I can see why I guess... it can't get much worse than the 8 experience.

Sounds like windows 10 isn't much better than 8,1 then. My new laptop will stay in the cupboard then. Funny thing is, this Samsung laptop I continue to use after 4-5 years has never had a glitch.

Is it possible for a computer shop to install windows 7 over the 8.1 system?.

I'm running XP and win7 at home, so I've been doing a bit of research into Win10.

Apart from that awful new user interface, it looks to me like the only major new feature is Cortana - a digital assistant like Apple's Siri. But it doesn't work in NZ yet, and probably wont for a year or more.

There are also no drivers available for a number of my old hardware devices ( Nikon Coolscan in particular)

It also looks like a number of the email clients don't do IMAP or POP3 properly

But in particular I actively detest the data harvesting, and the inline advertising and Microsoft's new terms and conditions....

Well guess that confirms how MS plan on making their cash moneys... Data mining; Shouldn't be a problem for most people tho, they're already on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Chrome, YouTubes etc etc
