What would you do? Encountered slow scooter rider on motorway at night

I wonder if anyone has any other thoughts about this

The other Tuesday night I was returning about 10.30 from the North Shore on the way to Sth AKL on the motorway.
I encountered a rider on a scooter doing about 70, wearing dark clothes and almost no rear or front lights.
The rider merged lanes without indicating or looking, he was very hard to see.

I doubt he realised it but a couple of cars narrowly missed him in the darkness, this happened in a couple of places.
He was all over the lane and changed without indication.

I saw this and slowed/followed him for several Ks, hanging back so that other road users could see him. (I am ATGATT)

My question is what would you do as a fellow rider?

Pass him, move on with your life, accept that he will soon be a red paste smeared along the road.

I'd have done the same as you - become tail-end-charlie and made my higher visibility a benefit both to him and the other traffic on the motorway.

Came across a young rider on a Yamaha Scorpio around 8pm in winter on the southern motorway - as I was getting closer to him I noticed his rear brake light was completely off, yet his headlight was on. He was virtually invisible from behind - no reflective gear or anything.

Rode in front of him, put in hazard lights and motioned for him to pull over in to a safe spot.

He wipped out a pocket knife, took out the rear light housing and fidgeted with the wires until the light worked again and rode off...

Is there a minimum speed limit on NZ motorways? In the Philippines there are three expressway speed limits: Max 100kph for cars, vans, etc. Max 80kph for trucks, buses, and Min of 60kph.

Motorcycles of less than 400cc are not allowed on them. A bit stupid, cos a Kymco 400 scooter is legal and a KTM 390 is not AFAIK.

If we're being honest, I'd probably accidentally run him over

Probably minded my own fucking business, and let the universe sort out the ones not intelligent enough to try their hardest to keep themselves alive. Probably would have given him a kick on the way past too for good measure. Humans are as stupid as they come , fuck em all.

Drop it into 3rd and pull a Mean Wheelie past him.....

In seriousness though - I would have minded my own business unless I had time to kill, then might have followed him to a set of lights and try and pass on some wisdom.

Now if it was a sheep fucker like you I was passing, I would have made sure you ended up wrapped around a power pole at the side of the road.

Another potential 15 minutes of fame here...

We will read about the rider in due course!
Cyclist on SHWY 26 0545 in the morning thinks it is okay to ride without lights from Tatua to Waitoa...
Pedestrian walking against the flow of traffic, no ability to be seen!
Jogger running on the road! when there is a perfectly good path on the other side....

We is all Idjuts! We are Human, we cannot think at times.....Natural selection.
But all of these fuckers above ruin my ACC levies....THAT is what pisses me off.....
