Tatra cars obviously had the same stylist as Tatra Trucks I can't find the model we had over here.
But they are rugged as they had a real interesting backbone chassis plus a kind of independent swinging tilting axel rear suspension they were 6X6 with an air cooled engine as well. Ugly but highly effective

Edit this is more what they were.

I read in a book they were actually meant to be a hatchback but something went wrong they couldn't stop it leaking or something and changed it at the last minute.
They were a hatchback... I had one. You may be getting confused with the Allegro. I had one of those too, and it wasn't a hatchback.

    They were both 1975 models.

Have seen a bunch of these parked up in the rental area at the airport, looks like the main purpose is to vacuum the road as it drives along

Agreed the AU falcon was an interesting style choice, and probably a bit much for your average conservative australian, but still better than opting for no styling at all and going for the blob on wheels approach.....

And as for the weird eastern european stuff, as long as you keep looking you'll find something uglier than what you thought was the ugliest car you've ever seen, it's a perfect demonstration of what happens when things such as designing something are taken over by a committee.....

Funny thing is my missus just bought one after weeks of tyre kicking (she wanted a jap car) and it's what she liked.

You should cut out a single tooth from plastic and hang it from the top of the grill.

I believe the second part of his post was in regards to the Leyland Princess, which had a boot when first released. My understanding/reading suggest that BL management didn't give it a hatchback as they were worried that it would take sales away from the Maxi (which indeed had a hatchback).

The Princess then became the Austin Ambassador in '82 I think, when it got a hatchback (and some minor styling updates).

    Yes, I think so.

I also had a P76 de Luxe. Unfortunately it had the auto on the tree and two headlights. Next model up was the Executive which had the floor shift and dual headlights.

Had a workmate that had a Diplomatic model P76 with all the fruit... electric windows, A/C, and a stonkin' 5 litre donk! That thing could tramp!

Agree, the reverse of ugly , beautiful machines .

To buy a new DS in NZ in 1970 would cost you 20% more than an HT Holden Brougham. Go figure

The P76 V8 was an alloy 4.4 litre. Your mate must have repowered it ?
