Got given a bike with no WOF and no reg as a courtesy bike

Checked the 'Busa into CycleSpot today for its service. No loan bikes available. "No worries - the boys in sales will sort you out with something."

Rock upstairs and the sales dude goes "Oh, got a brand new CBR300 you might like" sees me cry inside and goes "just kidding, let's choose you something fun."

Gives me an Aprilla Dessiduro 1200 - mean!

I head back into the city and promptly get pulled over by the cops on Queen Street.
    "What have I done?"
"No WOF or Reg mate - it's been out for a year. Don't tell me you didn't know...."
"Shit seriously? It isn't my bike - I'm so sorry...
"Yeah, well responsibility is with the rider to ensure all is good - etc..."

I explained it was a courtesy bike, mine was having a service and he wasn't too convinced. He asked if worked for CycleSpot. I showed him my Facebook post "check out my courtesy bike for the day" and he said fair enough and said he'd let me off. He'd pretend we never met but couldn't make any guarantees if I chose to carry on riding.

Had it not been a courtesy bike though, or I'd been a knob, he would have stung me for No Reg ($200 an 20demerits), No WOF ($200), cut down number plate ($100 and 25 demerits) and probably pink stickered it too for being so far out of WOF (over a year).
Another day and the registration would lapse completely.
As it was he complemented me for exemplary riding!

CycleSpot weren't bothered. "Well done for talking your way out of it - nice job"....

Can't say I'm very impressed. I know I should check it out but the salesman game me the keys to a bike in his showroom. I assumed his paperwork was up to date...

Great bike though - hilariously noisy and gallons of fun instant torque.

If you don't like it, I'll have it.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

    Pretty shit service of them.

And I'm sure if you did get tickets, they wouldn't reimburse you in any way.

Plus you'd probably have for fork out cash for getting their loaner bike back to them after being stickered.

Or they might've paid it all and apologised profusely...who knows.

Moral of the story, Facebook saves the day.

The guy went "Oh it's fine - we'd be the ones that got fined".
Er nah, not how it works bro.

I told him as a courtesy that the bike would be deregistered at midnight if he didn't sort it and he tried arguing. I just went, look I really don't care - I'm just telling you what the cop said.

They're gonna have a fun time when they sell it and then have to stall some punter while it gets re-vinned and he wonders why the plate changes.

    1. Aprilia Dorsoduro
    2. Your responsibility to make sure the vehicle you're driving/riding is legal
    3. You only get one set of demerits (the highest) from a set of infringements.

Loan bikes cost dealerships (or they hide that charge in the invoicing to you). You could have had the 300 couldn't you? I'm just happy to get a set of wheels to get away from the dealership and return (rather than messing with transporting the bike or sorting a lift). Occasionally you get lucky with something nicer...

Yeah, I know it is my responsibility - I'd still expect better from a reputable dealer.

And I wouldn't have moaned - he was just being nice finding something nice for the guy that dropped $16k on a bike a month earlier there. I'd have been happy on a GN - as long as it was faster than a bus!

I'd spin it round and say that loaning a bike is a great way to get the word out about different models. The experience aside, I found it to be an exceptionally fun bike to ride and my post here would be "had a go on a Dorsoduro - here is why I love it".
The guy at Cycletreads gave me the 2016 R1 for a couple of hours last time I was in. I told him I couldn't afford it and he said "I don't care, it is called advertising - I want you to tell your mates how awesome it is."

Is that a hard and fast rule or just up to the discretion of the cop writing the tickets?

I believe it's a hard and fast rule... but I'm foxed trying to find reference... I'm sure I came across it somewhere, ie, lets say you've been a bad boy, picking up multiple infringements (speeding, breach of licence conditions etc) at one stop and you get 20, 20, 30, 45 or something similar, you don't get all of them, just the highest set.

It rings a bell for me too, just not a very authoritative one. A quick google didn't clear it up for me either.

It would be rather handy if it were the case though. It would make riding with rego on hold a much smaller risk if the demerits from that infringement didn't apply when you've been pulled over for a speeding ticket, which is probably the only situation most people ever get stopped for.

Vehicles registered to LMVD automatically go onto exemption status. The plate is not going to lapse.

Which the cop knew since he threatened with demerit points. Reg not current is just a fine, on hold incurs demerits.

Shouldn't this be common knowledge ?

I'm with you - I'd probably never even check the bike was current in either if supplied as a loaner.

Good on the police though. A good bastard.

I'd be pissed. I can't believe some people are blaming the customer here.

Blame is the wrong word, but it is the vehicle operator's responsibility.

Like I say, I totally realise that it is my responsibility.

Just as it is my responsibility to take 10 mins before I nip up to countdown to do all of the pre ride checks in the owners manual. Some things in life you just assume though.....

As an aside, they probably shouldn't be doing 82kph in a 50kph on a testride either but I'm on a 'Busa so I'm hardly going to be one to preach
