The one I dread is the doddery old dude with a completely fucked lawn mower. "Can you just weld a patch on here mate, won't cost much will it?"

You can't turn them away, but there's just no way they're going to be able to afford the real cost. The last one cost me a whole day to rebuild, I swear the next time I'm going to just buy them a new one, it'd work out cheaper.

Even when I'm not busy, if it's work that really doesn't interest me or there's a high risk of downstream issues then I'm too busy to do it.

But it don't hurt to help out sometimes. The last lawnmower dude had maybe a couple of years left outside a rest home hospital, at best. If a few hrs work was the difference between him spending that keeping his garden nice or sitting around waiting to die then I can fit it in.

At least I don't have a convent school over the road any more. The penguins would bring broken toys to fix.

Yeah, got one in the shop at the moment. Nice old guy brings in an old rotary hoe side valve cylinder head that he is just mucking around with. Asked me to fit a helicoil, but me or anyone else I called doesn't have a helicoil that size. Just make up a bung and sleeve it down he says, but after beadblasting etc, found that the head is cracked. Just weld the cracks up he says, no hurry its just a toy to give me something to do really. Its over at the welders now who will do it gratis when he sees a gap. Will finish it when it gets back. No time charged on it as yet, and will probarbly only charge him $20.

Previous company i worked for, we had to do online training modules, and one day I completed the bullying module. After completing called my manager and told him that I can no longer run my branch because according to the bullying training module if one of my team thinks that a request from me is unreasonable for any reason then that constituted bullying and any and all complaints of bullying would be investigated. So yeah I see where you are coming from, your lazy labour unit was probably aware of how the system is now.
