    South China Sea Conflict

What do you think, Chinese Posturing? or something that has the potential to blow up into a major conflict?

I think the Americans have the grunt to deal to China, but there would be a huge amount of damage done to that region in doing so.

Surely America is warred out by now?

Must be Chinas turn to have a sea empire, don't want to be out done by the Japanese.

Will it be like the Battle of Midway ( in Sensurround)

China has a deep belief that the area belongs to them ... similar to Israel v Palestine. They have a pretty good military although I think only one aircraft carrier which i think they bought from Russia. Many coast based missiles though so they have a long reach.

For an interesting take on how this could turn out I refer you to the Tom Clancy novel 'Threat Vector'.

China has backed its expansive claims with island-building and naval patrols. The US says it does not take sides in territorial disputes, but has sent military ships and planes near disputed islands, calling them "freedom of navigation" operations to ensure access to key shipping and air routes.

So what has it got to do with America? - Why don't they just MTOB for a change? - Leave it to the dis-United Nations to sort out!

China will simply copy the USA and refuse to acknowledge any international ruling that doesn't agree with them.

There is an old adage if things are not going well in the economy create a diversion.
#note China growth while being above the worlds av, is not meeting their own promised projections.
They don't really want a revolution but its inevitable, given the peoples hunger for Mcdonalds, Coke and Levi jeans.

Oldie Japan is allied with USA as is Korea and the Philippines, remember the waters that China is now asserting as their own are hundreds of KM's into the international waters zone.
Hence freedom of navigation operations, who do you seriously expect to call china's bluff?

The current drama has been simmering for years but China is now pushing hard. There are oil deposits around the Spratly Islands but it's not just about oil, it's also about fishing rights. Malaysia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, and Taiwan, all have claims on the Spratly Islands in addition to China.

Everybody had been watching China build a military airstrip and nobody has done anything about it. Now what? Helen might be better off if she didn't win the race for Secretary General of the UN? The new appointee may inherit a giant problem.

    China ignores UN tribunal result
Agreements between Philippines, Malaysia etc (like Poland and UK)
China entering EEZ of other countries (ignoring international law)
China claiming land closer to other countries than their own
Clashes of Chinese military v fisherman

Yes, some worrying indications, and without some calm diplomacy, the potential for serious problems...

If something bad kicks off all the armchair experts will blame America for not dealing to the airstrip sooner...
