How is China's claim any different to America claiming :

I think the Americans have the grunt to deal to China, but there would be a huge amount of damage done to that region in doing so.

How exactly would the USA deal with China? They could only nuke the place - they could never (ever) win a ground war??? In a nut shell - if China wants to do this it will... Period...

...some of those provinces are so far removed from anything Chinese...culturally, historically and language that it's not going to take a lot...

Yep, if you want to bring a country to it's knees, split it into smaller regions and encourage them to start fighting amongst themselves.

It would be a variant of MAD - neither side wants a nuclear exchange, China probably doesn't want a conventional war and if the US decides to send 1, 2 or multiple Carrier Strike Groups, then it becomes a case of Does someone want to throw the first Punch?

Yep no winners in a nuke war no money for a 10 year conventional one.Then they wonder why insurgence and tit for tat terrorism hits on soft targets are the smaller poor sides weapons of choice...The stalemate that has stopped it happening all along.....The fact that the other party can launch their nukes before getting hit by yours then both partys are toast.

China has a deep belief that the area belongs to them ... similar to Israel v Palestine. They have a pretty good military although I think only one aircraft carrier which i think they bought from Russia. Many coast based missiles though so they have a long reach.
