I wonder if Japan worries about " payback' for what it did to China in the 30's and 40's?

I was rather surprised they were on it myself, I also thought the UK would have been on it as well. That said, I doubt China takes much interest on the humanitarian side of the UN though.

Relations between them are still rather frosty still on account of it. Japan didn't even formally apologise until 1972 and even then, it was a pretty weak one at best

Well I'm not the one who's been running around in circles crying about the sky falling every second tuesday since Bretton Woods.

I'm the one who's been pointing at you and laughing for almost as long.

So let's let the facts demonstrate who knows what, eh, I know it's not your usual méthode, but given that it hasn't worked, ever you might want to consider changing your vision du monde.

Or not. I'll just be over here, quietly sniggering.

china don't send warships to do their dirty work. They use their "coast guard" vessels (which are occasionally warships that have reached the end of their useful life and then repainted white/red) to intimidate and ram other vessels.
Also, commercial vessels are expected to do "AS ORDERED" by the military, which involves ramming and sinking - even at the cost of their own vessel. Compensation will obviously be paid to them for doing so.

All of the south china sea, the Mallacan straights AND the Indian Ocean are claimed by china. A great country which has never had blue-water aspirations or abilities previously.

The "death by a thousand cuts" approach is the preferred method of chinese criminal activity here.

I've been telling you lot this for the past five years though, so you should be appreciating the situation...

Well they did wallow around a lot of the area in those fucking huge junks, somewhat before Her Majesty's finest ventured into it. The size being a necessary feature for the particular style of trading prevalent in the east, then. Piracy basically. Anything smaller was fair game.

A lot of it is very thin, which caused a lot of the western fleet quite some difficulty. Unlike the locals, which drew a mere couple of feet.

If things did go belly up, it would hit our oil imports pretty damn quickly. Doesn't most of NZ's oil come via Singapore?

    Ruling against China

    http://www.msn.com/en-nz/money/marke...ere/ar-BBugoDG
China suffered a major defeat Tuesday morning as an international court rebuked its claims on distant waters that contain the world's busiest shipping lanes and declared some of its expansionary tactics illegal.
A tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, issued the ruling in a dispute between China and the Philippines, and the decision — and the responses of both those countries and others — could mark one of the most significant geopolitical events in years, according to experts

China is threatening to slap tariffs on New Zealand dairy, wool and kiwifruit imports if this country investigates allegations of steel dumping, according to a report.

The warning shot from our major export market comes as dairy farmers struggle with low prices and follows substandard Chinese steel forcing a redesign of bridge piles on the Huntly section of Waikato Expressway.

    Yeah. Build a port.
    Build some railroads.

Fuck over the locals and also claim rights to the Indian Ocean since they are now sending some commercial traffic through it.
