It's hard to know what you can believe in advertising these days but that's particularly cynical.

According to one TV programme those Frenz eggs lower left in the photo do meet the definition of free range. Although what most of us would consider free range, and what the producers consider it to be are likely very different.

Free range or Caged, either way I feel sorry for anything having to squeeze one of those bastards out each day.

People actually buy things at countdown supermarkets?

Bloody ripoff merchants. Always have been.

In Christchurch local dudes seem to go to Woolston Night n' Day store every now and then. Apparently everything there is free... if you have a gun.

The term Free Range is loosely defined by law. You'd think of chickens just roaming around a farm - some genuinely are, and you pay a lot more for these eggs - others ..... nowhere near this image.

Me I purchase them from local roadside stalls. Shit I've almost run over a couple of those chickens - that how free ranging the girls are. These eggs have very yellow centers compared to the caged ones and taste much better.

I think in some countries free range is technically just an out door access a certain width and height. Doesn't even need to be a very big out side area. Could be wrong though.

The aforementioned TV show actually filmed what happens in NZ. The best one, Frenz, gave the chooks access to a fair sized area of bare dirt, not one plant of any sort though IIRC. As has been mentioned this is not what most people would imagine when you mention "free range". I should seek out a local small scale supplier I'm sure such exist, the only one I'm aware of is a bit far away.

The lack of plants isn't necessarily a bad thing as chickens scratch in the dirt for bugs and seeds but a few trees and plants would give shelter and shade with extra food probably.

If any of you are considering having chicken's at your house then get the soil lead tested as you don't want to be eating lead or giving it to your children.
