I watch response with interest.

It's not mandatory for the general population here. Border staff though must be vaccinated, any who are not vaccinated will be "moved along". ( If I recall Jacinda's words correctly.)

OK, if you work for Customs you could move to Customs Parcels in Auckland maybe. If you're a casual staff member employed by a security contractor, and are not vaccinated, you'll possibly be out of a job.

So it's not compulsory, but if you want to keep the job you must get vaccinated.

COVID-19 and influenza viruses have a similar disease presentation. That is ... firstly ... they both cause a type of respiratory disease which can cause a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and death.
Secondly ... both viruses are usually transmitted by contact. As a result ... the same health measures such as hand hygiene and good in public etiquette (like coughing into your elbow or tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue) help prevent an infection.

Every virus can have it's mutations ... including the "Common Cold". Funnily enough .. the common cold has probably killed more people than Covid has.

Go figure ...



Treat all the viruses like they might kill you (or someone you love [or related/married] to)... because they very well might do.

Quick question all: what are people's estimates for when we get tourists back here en masse?

I'd wanted to ride the Milford Sound road last summer while it was relatively quiet, at least as far as overseas drivers went. Time, weather, workload and bills from the other road trip (Cape Reinga) caught up with me and it didn't happen. A bit of a shame but there's always next summer... or is there? Are they coming back? Or is tourist driver behaviour along that road overstated anyway?

Autumn is a nice time to ride the South Island. They actually have an autumn in places down there.

The other thing that would concern me about Milford is the tank range. You've been to Cape Reinga though so you already understand.

Just stay at Te Anau and take Real Journeys bus. You MUST do boat trip of sounds day or overnight so makes bus thing even more sense. Police base there so you can’t have too much fun on those roads anyway.
I just remember thinking to myself nearly ten years ago..,”yep bus was right choice” due to volume and it’s prob 50/50 bus campervan volumes...
Bus drivers have great dry humour and interesting local knowledge too.
