Well when you have ONE of our supermarket chains prepared to spend $45million on new security stuff after a 300% rise in theft and 800% ruse in aggressive incidents I think we have a problem.

My local is a Countdown and while I agree with your sentiment I've seen staff there be verbally and physically assaulted (barging through them with stolen goods) so yeah I support better procedures and security to protect the workers.

I haven't noticed that. What I have said is the NZ is the second safest country on the planet behind only Iceland. There is crime, but there is worse crime virtually everywhere else. We don't know how lucky we are.

Somerfield. But near the Beckenham branch (which is my local) there have been a lot of Housing NZ development blocks constructed in Sydenham in the past few years. So you get a wide range of people who shop there, the wealthy from nearby Cashmere, the working class of Sydenham through to the newly introduced patched gang members in the housing development blocks. Just recently I was there and we were entertained by 3 patched Mongrel Mob members with two females and a few children, yelling obscenities to each other. It's not uncommon to see a police car there as they deal with yet another shop lifting incident.
