So, I visited the Mainland last week, and everything was fine and dandy. After rolling off the bluebridge 2:30am sailing at around 6am - I started wanting food. By the time we started seeing eateries start to open we were up around Kaikoura. Started looking for a standard no frills bakery, which seemed like a rare breed in the South Island. I quickly learned if it had the word "Cafe" next to bakery, they were looking to make millions off rich tourists. Looks to me like they wanted their riches in one bloody transaction too!

After eventually finding a "just bakery" I go to buy my much beloved steak n cheese pies, I notice no prices, odd. Turns out they fucking want $8 for a freaking pie! Disgusted, I went on my way. Turns out this seemed to be the going price from Picton To Invercargill, and no listed prices was a common occurrence as well. Bastards!

Back in the warm bosom of the $5.50 steak n cheese bakery pie North Island, I now have had time to reflect after the seismic bombshell of South Island $8 pie thuggery. I'm thinking, South Islanders, you can keep your bloody snow capped pristine mountains, smooth in comparison motorcycle friendly, heavy traffic free roads, friendly easy going people and superior lifestyle living. Because as I navigate my way out of a pothole I fell into some time earlier in the week sporting blown fork seals and 2 dented rims - I know that awaiting me in the next north island town, no matter the size - there will be a surly asian faced baker with a fucking tasty $5.50 pie waiting for me with an option of a raspberry donut that I wont need to sell the wifes kidneys for in order to bloody purchase!

$8 Pies are bakery owners revenge on tradies. Jesus FKN Christ I just got my bills for some recent jobs done around house, been awhile since I needed professional.
I can’t under stand why people are resorting to selling drugs in this country when they could just be writing out a compliance cert and poking the pretty coloured metal hose things into holes.
Pies and other takeaway foods are just markers of inflation. They haven’t really gone up. It’s that your money has lost its value after the helicopter cash bonfires of the previous regime.

Thanks for letting me know that mate, now it makes sense when customers in front of me had been saying " I Rrrrreally, Rrrrrealy want a pie" The more rolled "R's" than the entire pirates of the caribean movie franchise was really code to show they were south islanders worthy of the $5.50 price - Bastards!

Hey Sugi you should know this already but us Mainlanders can afford 8$ pies as we don't stupidly pay 1.5 million for a old 1940 bungalow in order to exist in a city surrounded by norf islanders
