You know, the herbs and spices in the little box. With the 'pull here' tab of perforated cardboard on the top. Has anyone ever, and I mean ever, managed to open one of these boxes by tearing the top as suggested?

Yup, the cardboard used in packaging these days is shit. Unlike the plastic, which might be cheaper, but only in the super strong, could survive a nuclear winter version that is impossible to break by hand without sending the contents flying across the room.
Its got to be part of the whole maximise-profit-by-making-everything-involved-in-manufacturing-a-product-just-a-little-bit-worse business model.

Just zip it sweeties.
Those boxes are pretty robust alright. Squeeze the top to create a crease then just jam your thumb down like your forcing an inner tube into a 21inch rim and it will rupture along the zip line.
