    Unhappy CBR1100XX Stuck on SH1

    My tail of woe.
The bike is a 1999 Blackbird FI with 26K miles, riding into Wellington NZ this morning warm and dry, in the outside lane of state highway 1 when the FI light came on and the bike cuts out. Coasted across 3 lanes of rush hour traffic, much to the annoyance of the cage drivers, and checked the bike over. The 10 amp fuse starter / kill switch was blown replaced it with the spare, it popped as soon as I turned the key. Waited a while for things to cool and tried again, same thing, so I called the nice chaps from Motomart Lower Hutt. They collected the bike and brought it and me back home. This is the first time the bike has missed a beat in all the time I have had it (from new 99).
    So where to start?

Arnt those guys great at that shop!

FI problem.. Sounds like a problem for a mechanic to fix.

With a dead short, i would be looking for a wire that has chafed the insulation and gone to earth.
Perhaps under the seat or around the steering head (movement) or where there is a loom clamp.

Yeah, but what about the backfire from the VTR that went past.

    Nice trailer Motomart.

No, it's not likely to be an EFI problem, just summat electrical that affected some component connected to the EFI that in turn registered it as a fault.
It could be anywhere, but the most likely place is somewhere in the loom that's prone to chafing, bending, or corrosion. F'rinstance - on the later model VFRs, the wiring sub-loom near the steering head commonly fails. I expect a search of the Blackbird forums may turn up summat similar.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Bummer and good luck with tracing it; please post what you find - I'd be interested to know what you find

I think blackbird knows a bit about that fault.
Something to do with a diagnostic plug that corrodes and shorts. Most Honda shops should know of it.

Yep, I did the repair on Blackbirds alternator so I have a good idea of what might be wrong, Just thought I would post and get peoples thoughts before I set about stripping the bike.
    Cheers
