Aussie
I lived in North Queensland for six years, its a nice place but I wouldn't want to be a cop there.
If you are serious about going to Oz do your research first, each state has its own police force and conditions are likely to vary from state to state.
Policing is a great career, I wouldn't want to do anything else. We bitch and moan about it at times and we get more than our fair share of bitching and moaning directed at us but despite all the negatives its still a fantastic job.
For my last word on Aussie I'll quote Billy Connelly, "Its a nice place but it needs a population transplant".
Winding up drongos, foil hat wearers and over sensitive KBers for over 14,000 posts...........![]()
" Life is not a rehearsal, it's as happy or miserable as you want to make it"
I recall when I was in traffic (STU) we were directed to sit in or near black spots for about 4 hours of each shift. The idea being that people slow down when they saw you so their trip through the black spot would be slower and hopefully safer than otherwise might be the case. Bloody boring job, but had to be done.
Boy racers.... they are hoons (boy and girls too). Nothing to glorify there. I get sick of the burnout marks (like graffiti) left behind for homeowners to get upset at because of the mess they leave behind. Someone should do that in their driveways and see how they feel.
In my view, there is no place in the police for rude cops on the roadside. Professional and to the point is all anyone could expect or should expect.
Emailed the Victoria police a few days ago and "Please note that NZ citizens or residents are eligible to apply to join Victoria Police without being required to obtain Australian citizenship or permanent residency."
So hopefully its the same everywhere.
Any of you guys worked both places or know anyone that has?
I think i would like the lifestyle here more, especially somewhere like queenstown (recruiting lady laughed at me when i asked if the waiting list was long there, so not likely) but the career prospects and work might be better in aussie.

[quote=Toaster;1156453The police do a very public and thankless job. Dealing with all manner of shit and shitheads day in day out. Then they also have to do traffic to keep the govt happy and keep us safer on the roads all the while getting abused by people who deserved the ticket they got.
Yes, you get tossers in every job. But lets give them coppers a break. The traffic boys and girls are doing their job and we only have ourselves to blame for getting tickets - we choose to speed - not them. They have had the worst time of things because of govt policy and a few bad eggs that got way too much media hype and attention.[/quote]
Give em a break? Doubt it somehow.
Forget where I read it, but saw a question asked the other day;
Count how many times you've been ticketed for some kinda driving infringement (speeding / plate / not indicating etc...), now count how many times you've reported a crime (burgulary / beatings etc...).
Which is bigger?
9 times outta 10 it'd be the tickets.
So for instance, it's better for this country to ticket me and a couple of mates for speeding on 16 than it is to catch the fucktard who pushed a guy off the road into the Caltext on upper harbour drive?
Anything other then speeding tickets and it seems the police only turn up to tell the insurance company that it happened. No wonder people aren't scared of nicking stuff, where's the repurcussions?
I'm sure there are some good cops out there, my point is that they're definitely a minority, and it's no good saying they're just doing their job, that's pretty much the weakest excuse there is.

At least start off in your own backyard and stay in New Zealand.
You’re better off using what you know in the context what you know...(if you catch my drift). I also know of a couple of guys who went to Brisbane after time in the force in NZ. One came back and the other is over there now doing security work.
Don’t take this the wrong way – but I’m normally skeptical of peoples motives when choosing the Police force as a career. IMHO its an elite profession for people who are well balanced, are experienced and pragmatic and have high level communication skills.
I hope you genuinely meet the above criteria. The last thing I want to be is pulled up on the Southern doing 111kph by a smart ass who wishes he were in Queenstown for the lifestyle.
If you don’t meet the above criteria then maybe you’re best handling dogs. Most of the guys are bastards anyway.
Good luck with your decision![]()

Yeah, the Simpsons are always an accurate depiction of real life in NZ eh?

Thats right, just try it ...... taxation to the max and demerit points to boot.
24 over the limit and you are walking, 3 over the limit and you are in demerit points territory ..... want to argue with them .... falls on deaf ears.
Speed cameras, point to point cameras, mufti cops who entice you in to a "race" then book you.
Demerit points on speed cameras, red light cameras at almost every intersection.
You start with 12 points ...
