I was going to bail cause my back was sore but decided to take some HTFU pills and just get on with it. What can I say... So many bikes.. Brilliant day. Count me in for the next one!
I rarely get south of the city so had no idea where the hell I was the whole time. Nothing like rediscovering some of NZ's wonderful countryside on the bike. Great mix of twisty/straight road. Nice work guys.
Here was me thinking I was going to be too hot hahah! Was glad I left the thermal liner in the jacket when the rain started pissing down on us.
I thought heading back was the best part of the ride. Riding with that small group of quicker slow guys was great. Stopping for pointers on line before it got gnarly was really helpful too. Didn't catch your name mate but that first stop was well timed and I know it helped me with those tighter corners.
Anyone got a map of where we went? Would love to know where I was and how to get back there!
Thanks Mav and everyone else involved in putting the ride together today.
Thanks to all those who turned up today, it was great to see a lot of old faces and a lot of new ones,
I really enjoy organizing 250 rides, I think its great to provide an opportunity for less experienced riders to get out there and meet other riders and pick up new skills.
However nothing is harder then having to pick someone up off the side of the road. We thankfully have had very few bins on our rides (6 in a year, 3 of which were today), but every time we do, McJim and Myself both torture ourselves with the question "Was it our fault for organizing the ride?" "What could we have done to prevent this?" "Should we continue doing these rides?"
The answer in the end is that a lot of people gain so much from these rides and we try to reduce the risks as much as possible, but at the end of the day we ride motorbikes, and in that freedom and independence is an inherent amount of risk.
What can we all do to help?
Remember these are rides aimed at beginners and people who want a nice casual ride, if you want to come you are welcome to fit in but you need to understand that is the aim of the ride.
Please listen to us when we are giving instructions, they are for your own safety and the safety of the people around you,
This is not a rant at specific people or saying that people should not come on these rides, just reminding people what they are intended for in the hopes that we can create a safer environment for all of us.

You are top man, mav. Really enjoyed the ride, my first ever 250 ride, that too on open road.
Saw some of you guys on the back end on the trail today while driving the cage back from a mates place in clevedon. - Only could have guessed it was a KB ride... Pity I was not out there today but the bike is in the shop.![]()
The typical computer tech - Smashing things fixes things for good![]()
Didn't realise that corner was dodgy - guess it's coz I know those roads and subconciously adjust my line to avoid the worst of the camber.
Yep - I feel shitty and awful that we organised a ride and invited people out and 3 of 'em binned.
I didn't see any mad overtaking though. Mind you I spent a lot of the day riding on my own looking for everyone. (Yeah, I managed to lose about 15 riders...............again!)
Glad the binners have all reported in as walking wounded and pleased to hear that most of the bikes can be fixed with a wee bit of effort and a hammer.
Yes, can well appreciate the sentiment McJim and Maverick have posted. I was feeling quite concerned for one and all, especially leading off the slower 250 riders. Just a few hairy moments, which had my heart ticking - but thank the biker gods for their small mercies!
Good on those who take the lead and do the things so others can enjoy the event. Riding as a group has its own risks and rewards - but we are bikers. We know this already and work to reduce that risk and still have that freedom we love on the open road.
Now, lessons learnt, events and actions to reflect on - and ... where shall we be riding our two wheels of freedom to next?![]()
"I like to ride anyplace, anywhere, any time, any way!"![]()
think that would be me. Glad someone found it useful. I'll give a few more talks next time
I think the main problem is the size of the beginner group. Since some parts of the road are not straight forward and requires a combination of skills to ride thru them. Us experienced riders have that grind into part of our riding and we don't even think about it, but it is not as apparent to the beginners. On the way back, I was purposely slowing down way before the corner to compress the group (6 of them) so they all slow down to a reasonable speed before reaching the tight corner. Also to some of the beginner riders the issue is the changing conditions. E.g dry good roads and then suddenly changing to wet and slippery the next. They need to learn to watch out for them and react before they get themselves into a panic.

Whatever happened to the medium paced group? was that abandoned when i realised i needed to fill up my gas real quick just before the start? i didn't fit in with either group as the big bikes were too fast and the learners were too slow.
i must say, well done to the two other guys who had balls but no power (cbr250rr & cagiva 125) for tailing the big bikes and forming a middle group with me
Thanks for the ride, awesome funlooking forward to the next one.
