    Question - Bike oil?

Hi the old bike needs an oil change.

It's done about 4,000kms and the oil looks crap although it's only been in there for 2,XXXkms.

I was advised by the shop to use mineral oil until 8000kms "to help things bed in." (Whatever that means).

    Motul was the recommended brand.

    -----------

    Can someone please verify this?

Off to the shop soon to buy it.

    Thanks in advance,
    JSG

The stuff is rather black...so thought I'd change it for simple peace of mind. The bike has definitely seen at least one trackday with its past owner.

I personally don't touch motul either, but thats personal peference, my 600 has always had the same brand oil in since day dot,

I recall hearing that T-72 tank engines would typically shed over a kilogram of swarf into the sump within the first hundred or so hours of running time.

Is your motorcycle of Russian manufacture?

LOL... I'd suggest a mmagnetic sump plug if it doesn't already have one. Dunno about the synthetic vs mineral oils q though. Mineral oil combusts where synthetic doesn't (so readily anyway) hence the drop in smoking when changed to synthetic.

if you think its suspect change it, its pretty cheap insurance wise to do that.

i know we change to full sythenic at the 6,000kms on the 600 & 1000

Not at all. I was just, you know. Making conversation.

No, I'd say, when in doubt, change the oil.

Even when not in doubt, come to think of it.

He was referring to the Springfield water supply... but oil should be the same - especially when you aquire a new bike and do not honestly know when the oil was changed last.

Ive heard that oils dont need to be specifically for "bikes" either,Im using mobil one full synthetic in the r6...some folks say you shouldnt use an oil that has EC on the back anywhere(energy conserving) as it may cause clutch slippage,& some folk have no problems at all

Yes, you're quite right. EC stuff I've read breaks down or something causing the gears to slip or something...

Thanks for all your advice guys. Gonna put in Motul 5100 10w 40 for now then chuck it after 1200kms and switch to Motul Factory Line fully synthetic stuff.

Have to wait for Saturday as the shop didn't have the correct filter removal tool yesterday.

    The oil thing

[I] think this whole oil ting is dumb.Just use whatever but do it regularly and change the filter each time.Did not have synthetic ages ago, just rebuild the bike when it wears out.

    unless it's Guinness of course

On a serious note though I have always used synthetic and branded. I would also change the oil filter every time I change the oil even though they say every second change. for the cost of one I just think it's worth the extra protection.
