    Drowning cats guy

I saw something on the late news tonight, about a guy who said on campbell live last night that stray cats should be caught and drowned.

I'm not entirely sure I approve of drowning em, but he did have some very good points. Cats should be registered, all cat owners should be required to have cat proof fences to prevent their cats leaving the section, and cats roaming the street should be taken away like dogs are.

I know a bunch of you are cat lovers, what do you think? Personally I dont mind cats that much, but I positively hate having them come on my property and shit everywhere, or leave half eaten birds on my lawn.

well, they should be kept from roads at least... but they're roamers by nature, ofcourse they're going to get around no matter what fences are erected...

Last night.. it wasn't just "stray" cats that should be drowned...

His neighbours feared for their cats lives!!

I think it was the SPCA, that made some comment like, drowning was a cruel & inhumane way to put a cat down!!

He had a large drum, with a little water in it.. (said it needed more water in it) & a cage, & he showed how it was done.. but when asked.. he denied actually having DONE it to any cats..

The only thing I could see the point to was: there was a bit about keeping cats inside from dawn to dusk.. when cat's like to roam..

I took in a stray kitten not long ago..... She was the most loveliest little doll I've had... Tried giving her a second chance at life... A loving family and a safe environment... I took her under my wing after hearing locals discussing shooting her and her lil mate.. both were taken into very loving homes.. Sadly she didn't want to stay with me and my partner... We live in an area with ALOT of stray cats... Landlords hubby tried telling my partner to let our dog chase and maul them... Sick prick...

In no way do I agree with drowning them..... I would however support, catching, speying/nuetering of said cats, and releasing them again in order to "control" and prevent cats that have strayed and not returned home from breeding and creating more of a problem ...

Why do we need to register cats? When was the last time you heard of a child getting mauled to death by a cat, for instance?

Shit on your lawn is a problem not just caused by cats. Shall we register birds as well? Dogs sometimes shit on my lawn. Registration certainly didn't prevent it.

Fences and dog capturing exists because dogs have the potential to cause death and serious injury. Domestic cats hardly pose such a threat.

I think one of the most cost effective way the gummint could protect the local wildlife and cut down the feral cat population is by offering free speying and neutering through vets and the SPCA.

Along with a concerted trapping and culling effort aimed at wild cats, which they do have now but of course the little darlings are breeding fast enough to cover the losses.

In a year or two the problem would be reduced significantly.

In Aus it's really noticable that bugger all people have cats compared to here, and it's quite normal for the cats to be permanently inside.

Poor old cats never seem too thrilled, but at least having them in at night cuts down the hunting.

I don't have a problem with culling nuisance cats, but someone who thinks drowning is acceptable is just unbalanced.

Drowning cats is extra-cruel, as it's one of the most painful ways to kill a cat. It's so bad we have a specific law in NZ against drowning cats. You are permitted to kill them in humane ways but drowning is forbidden.

    Why?
Cats have a diving reflex, where they go underwater (presumably when they were in the wild they could go for fish or something) and their metabolism changes suddenly so they use less oxygen. Just like those kids who fall in icy water and manage to survive submerged for 20 minutes.
So it takes the cat way longer to die, and the pain is drawn out too, not to mention the terror.

    So don't drown cats.
Or I'll come over and punch you in the face.

Whereas cats just roam the countryside killing native wildlife...we're never going to run out of people are we?

Having watched the original Campbell Live article, I was thinking at that time "this will cause an uproar!".

Some people would be surprised what their "nice, tame widdle-puddy-tat" gets up to. Especially at night.
Feral cats need a high-speed lead injection.
