FWIW I reckon the don't use synthetic argument is completely fallacious.
But I don't have a new bike.
Any oil that conforms to the JASO MA spec should be fine for a bike.

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I thought synthetic was only to be avoided until the rings had "bedded" in? Slightly off topic but interestin' none the less:

I do notice, that every say 500km, i have to top up my bikes oil by maybe, 100ml.
Im using semi synthetic, does this just mean its burning it off here and there ?
Or is 100ml excessive, and do you think ive got a leak?
The total oil capicity is around 1100ml
I have always used mineral oil up to 6000km, then Castrol GPS semi-synthetic after that. The mineral I have used is Spectro 10W40. Best to get modern hard plated bores to bed in before switching to synthetic
WTF , you have over 5000 posts on a bike site, and you ask for advice about oil and question, the advice of a bike shop. Why do you think the oil looks like crap ? 4000km does not make a bike old. People on this site chuck off at the HOG guys cos they only ride in the weeked. The advice to use mineral oil until run in then go synthetic is quite the norm. Some bikes are run in at the first sevice, 8k seems excessive.
Wassup Doc?
I always ask questions bud, don't ask, don't learn. Just cos someone works at a bike shop doesn't mean they are an expert. If two or three bike shop head mechanics say the same thing, which then gets reiterated by people here who I personally know are really knowledgeable on these subjects, then I know to take the advice. I'm too poor to "test" things.
I am one of those people who only ride on weekends, sunny ones too. I HATE commuting. First I get too much aggressive attitude from people trying to drag race me and swerve in front of me, secondly it wears out my tyres, thirdly I hate riding slowly, fourthly riding a bike that's been custom tuned to nudge 300kmph at 20kmph through Sydney's SHITtraffic 50kms on straight roads each way to work is a punishment and more expensive than taking the train. I love my bike a bit too much to put it through that.
Used to run Plutoline Semi Synthetic in my older bikes, except my first 250 which did fine on mineral oil. The oil is probably fine but has been through a trackday at least once, just got a few false neutrals and considering I have some tracktime booked I wanted to be ready.
I just want the best product in the bike to make sure it works when I'm on the track, a false neutral coming out of a corner or going into one scares me.....![]()
Think that's only true of older engines. Many cars ship with fully synthetic form the factory, e.g. it's well known that Porsche recommend Mobil1 fully synthetic from mile 0. More important to change the oil if it looks dirty than worry about if it's mineral/synthetic/etc... = assuming you are using the correct grade, of course.
