Yes, stromfrau and I have a couple. A 17 yr old Standardbred mare and a 7 year old standardbred-quarter horse cross.
Time to ride
Did years of support crew, financier, groundsman, farrier, etc with the kids with pony club. Highlights were riding with mydaughter at pc camp (after teaching myself to ride) riding an Arab horse at the Pyramids, Aussie cattle muster...
tragically the nags have taken their toll on the body and ironically daughter is now allergic to them!!
We still own the horse float and it's brilliant.Mind you, we've got it set up to carry two bikes with all the tie-down points etc and our leathers etc. All our stands unbolt and it turns into a moving trailer or we could turn it back into a float if need be.
Mum had horses for 30 odd years and only sold them 2.5 years ago when they sold the family farm and moved into town. She originally drove ponies (Harness Club) before importing an Andalusian stallion from Australia and opening a horse stud.
The stallion definitely cost her truckloads because he was trained to rear on command, bow down, and walk sideways etc (sorry, I don't know the proper names for these actions!). He was one of the most highly trained horses in the country and this cost in the tens of thousands.![]()
My last horse was a standardbred.(first pic) I saved him from the glue factory and he was the coolest horse ever.
What a shame about the allergy. You'll have to teach her the joy of bikes.
I had a 3/4 Arab for a short while. Al Shariff was his name.(the little grey in front.) Was a psycho little bastard! I was working him around in circles then over some jumps when all of a sudden he farted! So loud he frightened himself and bolted!Had to grab one rein and try and pull him around to stop.

I cut my previous post shorter than I intended because my cell phone was ringing. Co-incidentally, it was Stromfrau calling me fro New Zealand to say that after she saw me off at the airport yesterday she went to the saddlery shop in Dunedin and bought a new saddle, stirrups and leathers, surcingle, saddle blanket, chaps, .... etc. There was more on the list, but I agree ... "Poverty is owning two horses."
All this is on top of having our horsefloat virtually rebuilt over winter, sending our youngest horse off to the trainers for three weeks to sort out a couple of bad habits, and god knows what else. I tell you, Horses are much more expensive than bikes.
Time to ride
Standard bred, thoroughbred and summit else the girlfriend has recently acquired from her work. Couple of others in livery ATM. Bloody skint bunch of arse.
