He might be able to get a larger sample size if he was willing to drop the bushel of sliced and fried potatoes on his shoulder - he'd get a better view.

Most kiwis and aussies (when asked) seem to dislike the english because 'they're arrogant and expect to win everything, big-headed, superior, etc'.

Might have been true 50-60 years ago, but it generally hasn't been the mentality of most english people since the 1960's and 1970's, when the country took more than a few hard knocks.

Look a bit harder and you'll find:

    1) that its a minority of idiots who have that attitude, and who make a lot of noise about it (and who are generally heartily loathed by most english - soccer hooligans being a good example).

    2) that most englishmen find it absolutely impossible to resist the opportunity for a good wind-up, especially when you're doing the equivalent of walking round with a sign on your back saying 'kick me hard'. See any of boomer's posts in this thread, or, well, any of boomers posts, really.

I think it all went pear shaped for the Brits when the Yanks unceremoniously pulled their support from Anthony Eden during the 56 Suez Crisis. But, notwithstanding any other ''contentious'' reasons Margaret Thatchers refusal to accept the Argie occupation of the Falkland Islands in 82 massively restored British pride. I know, because I lived there during that period.

It is a mystery that when most of us are descended from British stock that so many in this country knock them. Partly driven I suspect by left wing Republican bu.....t. British history is by no means clean but they have also given the world so much. ( Dont mention British Leyland and mushy peas ) And their sense of humour is second to none.

Now, Boomer. He is probably the most ''prolific pom'' on this site and yes he does talk a bit of shite and yes I suspect he is a bit of a lefty. But I have spoken to him, cant hope to meet a nicer guy and not a touch of arrogance.

I for one will be happily cheering for the Brits this weekend, in both rugby and Formula 1, and why the hell wouldnt I when my ancestors are British?

Yes, mention mushy peas! Life is so much better here, now I have a source for mushy peas and decent tea...

It amuses the hell out of me when I see the likes of Mehrtens or Oliver banging on about "arrogant" english rugby players...when was the last time England went to a world cup thinking they should win it as of right?

    Pot, kettle...

Hey, while some of our English folk are tuned into this thread, could you please help me understand the whole "Stiff upper lip" thing?
The only time i've seen such a thing is when Cecil the Ram is ready to "Tup" a few ewes.
Does the lip stick out very far, and is it only seen just before smelly "Pom" sex?
If I hire an English porno, will it be obvious then, or will I need to look closely?

Serious answers will be treated with disdain.

No bloody clue mate, something to do with upper-class Victorian "Ruperts"...nothing at all to do with (in Elvis Costello's words) the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne who actually did the graft of building the empire.

Well done Sth Africa. Took the English on at their own boring, defensive game and showed your strength, determination, and discipline.
The chariots wheels started to collapse with 20 mins to go, and that was that. Worthy winners.

As much as I hate to admit it - I enjoyed the game. No tries but the points that were scored were within the context of the game, not scored from ultra long range or sitting behind a forward pack having pot shots by drop goal. The ref had a good game only getting a couple of calls a little wrong - which is bloody good considering the pace of the game.

Well done SAFA's. See you in 4 years time - hopefully.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
It takes a big man to cry...and an even bigger man to laugh at that man.

And plenty of those ''upper class Ruperts'' you referred to fought and lost their lives in 2 world wars to help rid the world of fascist regimes, so that you have the freedom to scathingly refer to them.

I for one am sorry that the English came second. We have a Union Jack in the corner of our national flag, long may it stay there.
