Have you removed your instrument cluster and had a look at the big jack plug at the rear? If moisture has got in at any time, it's possible that you might have a bit of corrosion which is causing intermittent problems. Only 3 bolts holding the cluster on. if it's not that, then you might have a problem with your sensor.
did check sensor, and it tests ok. Have had speedo cluster out and see no corrosion. Have heard that regulator and or stator problems can cause dash display problems. But bike charges fine. I have been waiting for the speedo to perminantly fault, but it won't give up totally.
Intermittent problems are a bugger. you're right about the reg/rec - alternator scenario but that will happen quickly. My alternator let go in the south island in March and your instruments swing whilst the battery is discharging itself and then your bike stops altogether, so not that. Same for your ref/rec - you stop in a hurry. One other thought which I'm not sure whether yours has being a carbed model.... On the left hand side of your bike underneath the plastic tailpiece pretty much where you sit, there is some cabling with a block joint all taped up like a big lump in the wiring. Do you have one? If you do, corrosion can cause all sorts of problems on the injected model. If you have one of these, I can give you an article on the fix.
have looked at wiring best that I could without taking all the tape off. I will look for the block you are talking about. The article would be helpfull too. Thanks
Here's the wiring loom article - it particularly affects injected models but may still be present on the pre 99 carbed models - good luck!
Had the same problem with 99 Blade a few years ago.
Turned out to be a loose battery terminal.

You didn't say whether you had a workshop manual, but here's an extract from mine covering the speedo, tacho and sensor. It's for the '99-2002 models but i'd imagine that basics like this are probably identical. If you do find you need a replacement sensor or anything else come to that, go to JAWS in the UK like everyone else does. Great service, fast and sharp prices.
interesting reading the first parragraph, about speedo being effected by other eletrical inputs. - speedo could be working fine, then I use indicators, and the speedo needle will start pulsing up and down. often it will not settle down again when indicators are turned off. Then speedo will just stop until it feels like going again.
good info, thanks for the effort to get it for me. I will get some time at the weekend to take a look............ will let you know how I get on!
