That 650 was quite cool, had a 680cc kit in it, beringer brakes, arrow pipe and had a cool header pipe that went from the two exhuast port out and around each side of the engine and joined together by the rear shock, instead of the standard being both pipe run down the right hand side....i think some one had spent alot of money on it at some stage, would have been a good buy at $6.5k

Got another question; does water cooling make a noticeable difference in performance eg. XR650 vs DR650? The summerfest pricing on the DR is pretty damn good, but I don't peticulary want something that's sluggish. Air cooling being an issue around town going between red lights would probably rule out that bike anyway

How quick is the DRZ400SM? A new one is at the top end of my theoretical budget but with a 24 month warranty spending a bit more wouldn't be such a bad idea, and insurance wouldn't be crippling since premiums are so high for someone my age. So they're a sensible idea, but I'm always more keen on the high performance bikes (like I'll always want a Fireblade over a Hornet, a bad habit for someone with low money) and the DRZ seems to me to be a farm bike in road racer clothing

This looks like a good buy: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-127488107.htm

Only problem is it isn't road legal, and probably looking at about a grand to legalise it (certification and vinning)

All I can say is that I have spent quite a bit of time in the saddle of a DRZ400sm on the open road and around town and was impressed all round, not the most powerful beast on the road but a very reliable rig that could turn it on if pushed (on the road) i think they are a pretty good buy.....but in saying that I wouldn't go out and buy a new one, there are plenty of older ones around that are half the price.........if i was to buy new, it would be KTM or a WR

I'm looking at getting something like a DRZ400 next year Coyote.
I'm looking into whether to get the DRZ400E with some motard rims or the DRZ400SM and some offroad rims, but I've heard they're quite different machines.
I think it's the best machine for me though, able to do the local trails or do a bit of distance to other areas, while quite easily turned into a motard for a blast around the twisties.
I'm not worried about the differences in the suspension between trail and SM as anything is an improvement over what I have now.

"I came into this game for the action, the excitement... go anywhere, travel light,... get in, get out,... wherever there's trouble, a man alone... Now they got the whole country sectioned off; you can't make a move without a form."

Paved roads are just another example of wasted tax payer dollars.

I was not very impressed with it when I rode the stock standard bike. However I suppose that I was comparing it to a slightly tweaked enduro DRZ, which ran a fair bit harder. Reading this thread and checking out the pics is making me drool. I just wish I had found a set of rims for my DRZ before I had my MX off. I suspect it would not have taken me long to get addicted to SM and I had the v-twin Aprillia as the possible next new bike on the long term plan. Bloody awesome all.
Those who insist on perfect safety, don't have the balls to live in the real world.

The liquid cooling allows everything in the engine to be built with smaller tolerances so you have the ability to tune an engine to perform better than the equivalent air cooled engine. So a road going version of either engine will tuned to achieve the beat performance based on the servive intervals allowed. So you'll ffind that CC for CC the wqater cooled engines will generally perform better.

An air cooled dirtbike engine is also designed to work hard at low speed with vitually no air moving around the engine ( stuck in a bog up at the back of the Orange hut) so around town will be no problem.
XR all the way bro! Don't get me wrongI like Suzuki's but DR650s are sluggish and heavy and consequently last forever.

Right on. The SM is detuned a bit for the road (compared to the dirt bike)thing but have plenty of potential.

Get in touch with Limbimtimwin he has an SM, if you speak to him nice he might let you have a go.

Probably a good place to start if you can make it work financially, though I must warn you you need to think about having money for the conmsumables because one you get the buzz you're fucked and will probably end up with a seat shaped recess in your ass from all the riding you've been doing and we all know what happens then.

Good call Sully, I used to be a hard nosed sports bike rider (only 1000+cc bikes in the shed, must have full fairing blah blah blah).....until the day I rode a XR650sm......that was it sold everything and now only have Motards....

    Yeah, yeah, i know, it's a sickness
