You can actually lever the follower down with a screwdriver on the edge beside the shim and pull the shim out with a magnet. It's a little fiddly but quite achievable. Failing that, just take note of your cam timing and pull the camshafts out.
Do you have a diagram showing the cam timing? If not, turn the crankshaft to get No.1 firing on TDC and the exhaust cam sprocket should then have an arrow with a No.1 pointing forward level with the top surface of the head. Further back around the ex cam sprocket will be a No.2 with an arrow pointing towards a pin on the cam chain. On the inlet cam sprocket will be a No.3 with an arrow pointing to another pin on the cam chain. Count the number of pins from the No.2 mark on the ex sprocket to the No.3 mark on the inlet sprocket and make sure when everything goes back together the marks are in exactly the same places. You will have to back off the tensioner as well. (Sorry if you're aware of how to carry out the process already).
thanks katman, i have rebuilt this engine ground up so know the process
i don't like disturbing the camshafts though, some bolt-threads might not endure another dismantling (i had to heli-coil quite a few during the rebuild)
hopefully i find the tool locally soon
(or i use the screwdriver and magnet, or i don't ride till i get the tool from the usa)
Do you want my ones again? They are still in the bag you sent them back in, I doubt if I'm going to use them for a long time
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

Gidday,
I'll have a look when I get home this evening - I know I have got one, just haven't laid eyes on it in quite some time...
If I can find it you can have the use of it for as long as need be, will PM you if that particular mission is successful !!!
I'm in New Lynn which, at least, is a bit closer than Upper Hutt !!!...
Cheers
