It also does not necessarily mean the omission of a word. Its use generally means that the reader should be able to fill in the implied blank based on their prior knowledge or experience of the subject matter being discussed.
Just to expand on this theme a little... (note 3)

I have learned something reading your post, but, when I do this .............. I call it a row of dots... It is not masquerading as an elipsis it is a "row of dots" and surely must be a valid option?

But what purpose does a "row of dots" serve, other than to get a post above the requisite minimum 10 characters? You may as well use a string of capital Qs. There is a bit of a difference between purveying written language and just making pretty pictures on a page. Me, I blame smilies! =^..^=

Read a few of my rambling posts and you will see I dont need the .......... to fill the 10 char. requirement..............LOL. It is just something I do...

A row of dots, that's all it is. Would you honestly prefer I used a row of capital Qs? QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ really I think that is being silly...LOL

Smilies are a bit of nice, inoffensive "tat" to be able to use while posting.

Ok I have done enough stirring now, am off to feed the man.

You know what I love about KB?

I love it when a thread about threesomes turns into a thread about chillis, and I love it when a thread about virginity turns into a thread about the use of ellipses.

Anyway, more than one Q would make Captain Picard's life unbearable.
kiwibiker is full of love, an disrespect.

It only took one to make ST-TNG unbearable.
