A neighbour of mine had a dog that used to chase cars, and motorcycles.

It was a really nice dog, just liked to chase vehicles.

The dog was quite clever, it would never actually get in front of the car - always attacked from the side so it was in little danger.

But it got it wrong one day - chased a car, then stopped to gloat, and got run over by the trailer.

Bottom line though for me at least ?

Don't swerve for a dog - it will destabilse you and may put you in harms way from other road users - you may cross the white line or get into shit/parked cars etc on the left.

Brake if you can do so without falling off or having the moron behind you mow you down.

[They have to do some more work on those doggy micro-chips. They are already adjusted to stop dogs biting - can't they add a program to stop them chasing us ?]
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.

A dog fucked my very first brand new bike.

It was a brand new XL175, and the brother wanted to take it for a fang.
I'd just got it home from the shop, so I said fuggoff. The old man talked me into it however, so off he goes, just around the neighbourhood.

I waited, and waited... no brother/bike. After half an hour the old man drove off to find him. He was just being loaded into an ambulance, a couple of blocks away. A dog had ambushed him from a driveway when he was doing about 70k and he actually ran the bastard thing over and lost it.

Bent forks, handlebars, levers, fucked headlight, instruments and a big crease in the tank. It’d done about 15 miles.

Oh, and the brother broke his leg.

    Bastard.

    Oh, that's gotta suck..

Gotta say I'm yet to encouter a dog in the road but I couldn't say i'd like to. Some of those things are pretty big..

I have however hit a duck before, one dark night the dark darted infront of the front forks, got blood spatter all over my leathers and all over my bike.. felt pretty bad when I was cleaning the bike up but essentially i'd say it's not worth the risk to you or your bike by dodging an animal.

Survival is my top priority, oh and having fun.

    Yeah, I think we do.

But it's a bit of a problem enforcing such legislation out in the back blocks of a country with slightly more land area than the UK and a population of only four million - most of the time, nobody's watching.

Yeah and I would suck to live in a country that is massivley over regulated!

We are in danger of ending up like britain and that would suck.
I hear they have cameras all over the place and all sorts of Orwellian shit.

People whinging and crying that they want to be looked after and "the government should do somthing" will only bring It about much faster.

Let the dogs roam, I'm the one steering my bike and I am the one responsible for what happens to me while I am riding it.

    Absolutely.

I was hoping someone would use my post to respond in this fashion.

Long live personal freedom, small government and a population that tells the rulemakers to go fuck themselves!

And yes, if that means I have to occasionally keep my eyes open for dogs on the road when riding through the countryside, so be it.

that and I thought it prudent not to launch in to a tirade about whinging poms, even tho I had one all thought up and no its nothing personal against anyone its just it must be one of the most accurate sterotypes around but by whinging myself....you get the idea.

We'll just have to cut Bikern1mpho some slack until she's acclimatised to living in a country that kicks arse.

If she's still whinging six months after she moves here, then it'll be a free-for-all.

If you can take note of the dog, phone dog control at the end of your ride with the location and description. Quite often they know the animal from other complaints and will go visit the owners.

You are not required to swerve. Owners must have their animal on a lead and under control when they are off the property. Farmers I believe may have different laws as some farmers have to chase stock (with dogs) accross the road to the paddocks on the opposite side.

When I am riding (if feasible) and I see a child of animal on the side of the road I try to slow down just incase they decide to do something stupid.

    Anti-britain

Yes IT would suck to live in a country that is over regulated. Do you have any idea how much regulation they have in the UK and fo what?

Yes we have cameras tis true and if they were used properly it would be to keep an eye out for bloody illegal immigrants and pissed yobs (oh yeah you have those here too don't you).

Having legislation does not mean that you are whinging, and I don't know if you have had a serious accident or lost anyone who rode a bike but having legislation that may save a life is not a bad thing!

It's this attitude that will eventually have us all being transported from place to place in nothing but fully-padded ten-wheel Acme People Movers on roads with 50kph speed limits.

Dogs shouldn't be allowed to roam the streets, but bugger getting overly bothered about it. If you're riding a motorcycle and you can't keep out of the way of a dog, you probably should be in a fully-padded ten-wheel Acme People Mover.

    Owners!!

I am an aminal lover and used to have a dog when I weas younger but I always made sure that Zippy (mad insane springer spaniel) was well behaved and that she never crossed the road without me.

I think that everyone whould be safe to ride on the road and that the bloody owner who let their dogs run around willy nilly should be legislated against; the birch is a good idea. Oh sorry is that too right wing and British for you ex colonials?!!
