Price of tires these days

Howdy guys.

About 6 month ago I got a brand new rear BattlaX fitted for $265 i think. At the time fronts were around $200

Now i'm looking for a front tire for me and a rear tire for same bike (my friends).
I went to one bike shop and I got quoted $265 for front fitted, while my friend got quoted $390 for sports rear tire.

So my question is, how much are the bike tires going for these days ?
I know it depends on the tire, but we are both looking for something with good road grip (good on wet, good when cold). Any particular brands I should check out (i think i have pilot sport on the front, and it is ok) ? any particular Auckland bikeshops I should check out ?

Is buying one set (front+rear) be any cheaper then buying just one ?

Cycletreads on Barry's Point Road, Takapuna are doing tyre specials this month. If they have a tyre you want I expect their pricing will be very competitive.

i don't know what tyre sizes you have.... wider tyres = more money

my rear tyre is a 140 from memory.

and i got a set of the best dunlops

$450 for the set fitted from mt eden motorcycles. (highly recommend them, all top guys)

tyres and brakes are the two things you do not cost cut on...

I don't know what crap story is likely to be had, maybe we are subsidising cage tyres because I have just bought some 17" 235/45 Dunlop sportmaxx's cheaper than they were 12 months ago, and they were rediculously cheap then. ( I'm sure sportmaxx was a motorcycle tyre years ago).

I had Michelin Pilot Road 2's (dual compound) fitted for $540 about 4 months ago

without fitting they were $265 - 170/60/17 rear, $215 - 120/70/17 front

I'm not meaning to be cheap on tires, on the contrary, i want the best road tire i can buy, regardless of how long they are going to last (within reason).

It's just i feel like some shops are trying to rip me off. It is very evident (not only bike shops), i get consistently quoted higher when i turn up in my white shirt in a tie, than my friend who turns up in dirty work overall....

on the front i have 110/70/17 on the read i dont quote remember 150 or 170 /70/17 I think ?

I get that ripped off feeling too.
I tend to by my tyres in Welly MC as they are consistently $100 to $150 cheaper for a rear tyre than my local.

yeah it's always good to go the poor student look...

you gotta go for a look that matches ya bike though lol

i just go consistent with one shop.

so they take care of me.

pays to know the wholesalers too....

with the amount of levers i go through getting them wholesale for $20 instead of $32 retail is always nice

Got me M3's fitted 4 months back for $500 at cycletreads, thats a 120 & 180/70/17 Try them, its hard to beat their prices

From memory that's just a smiggen more than I paid for my Pilot Road 2 rear & Pilot Power 2CT front in May.

yes sport max i remember them about near 10 years ago

about 220 then a rear tyre im am trying to remember

In some tyres there is an enormous markup, tho not at the retail stage.

you also have to remember that theres a lot of petroleum in making tyres
so it stands that if the fuel is expensive tyres go up also

road tax on them may be pushing them up a little as well
