There are many big things in the sea. I'm sure most ppl that do much swimming have probably been withing 100m of one and not known. You're more likely to die riding there on your bike than for one to eat you thou.

One trip one of our party was circled by a Hammerhead while doing a safety stop.

A Mako chased one of us into the back of the boat. As he was hauled in by the tank valve the teeth came down on the back board of the boat.

I have had 4 bronzies circle over head. They cant have been hungry or else could see I wouldn’t taste too good.

A few years ago there was a Great White spotted fairly close to shore and it was thought to be resident so we of course went looking for it – as ya do. We found a baby … I would hate to see what mum looked like.

No one was hurt or maimed. The more you do ...the more you see.

yeah, in SA there are HEAPS of sharks EVERYWHERE you want to go swimming at the beach and sometimes even crocodiles... the thing is.. put some shark netting up, make people aware not to go swimming beyond them, and everyone will be sweet.

the sharks don't mercilessly attack people... and they're ATTRACTED TO ORANGE, YELLOW, AND RED!!! hence why they swam around the life boat thingie... and it didnt help that the people were (i heard this so shoot me if it's wrong) harassing the poor thing and chasing it etc.. of COURSE it's going to BITE!! it's the only thing it can do really!

sorry, end rant... I believe sharks are not dangerous unless provoked to be so in some way or other so if you keep your wits, you will be FINE.

oh p.s.. the guy said on the news "it didnt look like it was just biting in defence, it looked as if it wanted to KILL us!" ... i go PFFFT, get a life... you were annoying it!

I called in for a bit of a play in the surf after a day at Goat island trying my hand at underwater photography. Was kinda dissapointed to find the beach closed, with all of the people about up there I figured the odds had to be pretty slim for it to pick me out of the bunch.

U.S. Annual Average of Animal-Related Fatalities During the 1990s
    Number of Fatalities Per Year
    Deer (Vehicular Collisions) 130
    Dogs 18
    Snakes 15
    Mountain Lions 0.6
    Sharks 0.4

And if you live in the USA (statistics more readily available) you are 37 times more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than a shark attack.
