I can't do the whole trip as I'm going to Queens of the Stoneage and Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday night.

My g/f's parents live in Dargaville so will hopefully ride up through Waipoua with you on friday then turn back and stay there.

I wish it was that simple... lol

Well, I'm also saving up my money for something else so I have to pull out lol

    Note from EJ:
OK guys, I was going to say this to you guys during the briefing but since I'm not comming, I'll post it up.

    Important things to know.

    1. Since its a 3 day trip, get some clothing packed but not too much. Travel lightly (important)
    2. Drink lots of water. V is good
    3. If the weather is cold, drink warm or hot drink (they really help)
    4. From Kaitaia to Cape Reinga, there are no signs saying e.g. "84kms to Cape Reinga", so you might feel that the road seems endless (since you don't know how far you've traveled).
    5. Reset the trip meter to 0 in Kaitaia, and you would prob reach the gravel in about 98km. From the beginning of the gravel to the Cape Reinga, its exactly 18.5kms. Oh btw, there are about 5 hills to go over (gravel). It may feel endless...

Don't know what I'm talkin about? Then experience it and regret!

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

    Indeed, good stuff EJ
Tryin to decide just how lightly i will travel, and what combination of luggage carrying i shall use. Tank bag is way too small, but could likely do it with tank bag + backpack. Problem then becomes fairly full backpack on for three days solid = not such a good idea.
Might just have to throw the saddlebags on. They do get in the way a bit, but will just have to live with it i guess

Distance to the cape is a good point for those with small tank ranges, be aware that the Kaitaia-Cape-Kaitaia run is roughly 225km, approx 3h riding (slower speeds + gravel etc). There is gas at Houhora (72km from the cape) and a very un-reliable station at Waitiki Landing (20km from the cape). Both these options will be more expensive than your average servo (read: criminally so, especially on easter weekend), last semi-reasonably priced gas is at Kaitaia.
Bear it in mind, and if someone can easily carry a jerrycan, it might be a good idea. (i have one, but not easy to carry. will look at ways to strap it on closer to the time if needed)

Oh, almost forgot, There is a BP station just outside of the Kaitaia (north). It is PLENTY to go back and forth from that point with a full tank. But remember to fill up before leaving Kaitaia after visiting Cape Reinga lol

Hmm.. the cape's getting more and more uninviting the more you people describe it. I may give it a miss, but i'll decide how I feel at the time.

About carrying stuff.. How much you planning on bringing Chocolate wheels?!

It's three days.. Leathers, T-shirt or two, spare change of trousers, maybe boots if you use those massive ski size riding boots.

That'll all fit in me back pack

But whatever, all to their own and what-not.

Man i'm real keen for this. Woo! Fucking wicked to be a biker.

Highly recommend an extra pair of socks. They go really nasty after a couple of days of long riding!

Cape Reinga = tough? You can't beat me with that attitude!

Well bear in mind you'll have all your riding gear on unless stopped somewhere, in which case you can just throw it all in a pile if need be. Not such a good idea if we stop somewhere and wander away from the bikes tho i suppose.
Main thing is a few changes of whatever you wear under your riding gear, something warm for the evenings, small amount of food / drink (personally will be a box of meausli bars and bottle of water minimum, small snacks during the day go a long way for energy).
Plastic bags definitely a good idea for smelly / wet gear. My socks sttttteeeeeeennnnkkkkkk after a day in boots!

Im not going to the cape, i'll stay in kaitaia whilst all people who want to go can go and come back, then we can continue. I'm not keen on gravel, maybe when I am a little more experienced. This is gonna be a wicked trip and a good time to make some good mate and get to know people. Now i gotta make a list. Travelling light..yeah right, I hav eto carry like four litres of two smoker oil.
