try putting on a bit of brake to transfer weight to the front wheel before you go all out, you need to load up the front wheel before you try to stoppie or it will just skid

*disclaimer: this is 2nd hand, not from my own experience

http://www.bikepics.com/bikemovies/ repost !!! but its in my favourites so i dont care
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

don't just grab the brake, ease it on. find am empty carpark. let all the weight shift onto the front wheel first to give more traction then pop it up. arms straight, big balls, start small, don't panic. (EDIT: maybe it IS the bike, but i should think a bandit could stoppie no sweat)

mind you mine are all pretty short, never been able to glide on the front very well. there's a knack to it i suppose....

just remember a wheelie can nearly always be saved by using the rear brake. stuff up a stoppie and all you can do is jump clear

    I love stoppies

Most people seem to be better at wheelies than stoppies. For a long time my stoppies were a helluva lot better than my wheelies!

It is not just a case of grabbing a handfull of brakes, I find weight transfer is key as well as sort of compressing the shocks.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
It takes a big man to cry...and an even bigger man to laugh at that man.

yeah quite easy to snap your spine, 170 kgs landing smack bang on your spine is never a good idea

its the most disgusting feeling when you just go a tad to high in a stoppie and all you can do is put your hands out and hope

Great way to break your scaphoid!

Tuck your arms in, anyone see the 250 GP rider fall last round, tucked his arms so they didn't flail.

And look at martial arts they dont fall arms out.

what sort of mx bike? i find it's alot harder/neigh on impossible to do on those due to more suspension travel and much less traction

arms out is a naturally evolved mechanism to absorb impact and tideally protect your head/organs/body... unfortunately evolution hasn't had time to catch up with bikes yet, but i'm sure using your arms to take some strain off your neck isn't a bad idea...

my dirtbike experience tells me that if it turns to custard, be it on the ground in the air, flipping forwards, flipping backward, going too far sideways (not good while in the air), or simply in a serious "i'm fucked" situation, just jump the hell off!

the one vehicle impact (that wasn't bike vs bike) i've had, at about 80kph into the side of a 4WD, the "bail out" instinct kicked in right before impact. same for all the bike collisions where i saw it coming (rather than suddenly being on the ground under another bike).

riding since i was 13 years old, on and offroad, and yet to break a single bone

have you ever flipped a stoppie? have any of you guys actally flipped a stoppie?? lets see you guys not put your hands out, its a reaction, everybody does it, nobody thinks: "oh yeah i better not put my hands out, i better just keep them where the are and land face first, yeah"

my mate zanda nearly broke his jaw from flipping a stoppie without a helmet on and he didnt put his hands out and landed flat on his face.

if he had put his hands out and wore a helmet he would have walked away without any injures.

Ive flipped heaps of stoppies, once time i did a 65kph stoppie flip, again put my hands out as a reaction to break my fall and rolled it off but my shoulder got stuffed against the road and pushed downwards, cracking my shoulder blade...

even the world champion puts his hands out and rolls it off

i know of someone who screwed up a stoppie at 120kmh on the motorway, he came away with crazed legs and chin (had full face helmet) and his bike only got light drop damage.

Trick is to be in 'fuck up' mode before it happens and be ready to kick/jump as hard as you can and hope you get clear.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
