Just looking at a race programme from 1997.

The classes where:

Formula1/Open (No capacity limit)

Formula 2: 4 stroke: up to 600cc multi / 750 twin / 2 stroke: up to 410cc multi / open single

Sports Production 600cc : Up to 600cc Standard Production Motorcycles

Sports Production Open: Standard Production Motorcycles

Formula 3: Up to 400cc multi / 500cc Twin / Open single / 2 stroke: Up to 125cc multi , 250cc single, 500cc aircooled single

250 Production: 250cc Standard Production Motorcycles


Some of the Sports Production guys cross entered into F1 and F2.
Dave Cole had the Number 1 on his 600 bike.

Can anyone tell me what mods where allowed on the Proddy bikes?

I remember that year. I think Dave also changed wheels in between races to slicks for F2. I think Rees, the "Rat" and Haldane also changed tyres for F1...I may be wrong as I was only little.......... The star of that year was Chris Sherriffs riding a borrowed stock standard 1992 RS125, lapped Ruapuna in the high 1:40's!! or was it 1:41? Still damn quick for a pre '95.

Yeah , shame about that F2 class dissaperaing. It was mooted some time ago that a class that ran any carburetted proddy 600 (pre 2000), with GP250 bikes (Pre 2000) would be worth reviving ?. Everything else open.

Remember Holden (duke 600) v dave cole v bruce anstey (tz's) v mcmurdo (zxr 600 home made with carbon frame) v guys on fzr 400 with 600 motors v guys on rs's etc..? - some great racing. What killed F2 was (a) there was (briefly) enough decent 250s around to create a separate class and (b) 600s seemed to overtake 250s in the late 90s creating a clear mismatch.
F2 had a time and place tho!

Slightly off topic, so apologies... but i saw one of the old Steve Roberts 'plastic fantastic''s the other day in the Maidstone Yamaha shop window. If you wanna see some good old kiwi ingenuity and revive some memories of the Hiscock era, go and have a look.

So what happened to this kind of thinking? Where are the homebuilt specials these days? Even in F3 it seems to be all OEM modified or made with off the shelf parts. A Tigcraft is probably the most radical bike out there, but even that can be store bought (in parts) over the counter.

Where is the thinking outside the square? I mean, if you wanna go exactly as fast as everyone go and do exactly what they are doing. If you wanna go a little quicker, think a little different...if you wanna go a lot quicker, think a lot different.

From my understanding of the current MNZ rules and management you are not allowed to make your own anymore...
