Agreed and anyone who drinks that Lion shit needs their head read (or is that red?)!!!

My point is that that's already happened.

Whether or not the original brewery stays open is moot.

Posted by some mummy's boy who has never supped Brewjolais. Any corporate who can brew stuff that good gets my vote, whether they're brewing in Stoke or downtown Wellington. I'm more than willing to sup people's share if they're going to spit the dummy.

ya rekon mate? Mummys boy eh? Ya got that wrong indeed!
Nah what I get pissed off about is the big guys knocking off the little guys. For your information I lived in Nelson when Macs actually tasted dammned good...now its just a bit better than most of the crap that the big breweries brew, that generic pisswater that they call beer...It has totally lost its appeal to me...You can have my share of that pisswater...drink away, make yerself sick!

Brewjolais is good, shame its only available part of the year. Sassy Red is another fine drop but the altenatives??

Emersons, Tuatara, Epic, Moa. Still working on this list but each of these breweries is turning out fantastic beers, IMHO even better than those Mac's beers listed. (I'm pretty sure they're all NZ made too.)

    Have to agree :(

We were discussing this very matter over the weekend.

    The consensus was that...

    Macs has gone badly downhill

Their current rating is "disappointing" aroud here

And whats worse, I see no reason to expect any improvement

Thank goodness for Green Man, Emersons, Tuatara, Epic, Monteiths and those breweries who still know how to make great beer

Epic's Pale Ale is a hop explosion, but not exactly widely available. Moa, I found to be a bit of a disappointment, it didn't live up to the promise of the packaging and presentation (I'm not a fan of old man Scott's wines either really).

Tried my first Moa this weekend, having seen it on the shelves for a while.

What a weird beer. Most unusual, but hard to describe. Had to work hard to finish my glass.

Won't be buying that one again

Yeah maybe - but their lager tastes better than Mac's Gold...

Concur. I actually like Mac's Hop Rocker, but I like stuff like Wanaka Beerworks, Green Fern, MOa better. Sure its more expensive but it tastes better.

SOmeone up above was saying about the lowest common denominator? Its a market, and marketing: How the hell else would sewer swill like DB, Lion brown or (ecccccch) Tui sell otherwise?

you get exactly what you pay for in this life. There are no free rides.

But winter is for wine, anyway. red wine.... mmmmmmm Pinot. or Italian.

I wasn't too impressed with the Epic - I think the Hop Rocker is better, if you want a hoppy beer.
Alan Scott's wines are OK, but his best was the "Joshua" pinot noir (no longer available), named in honour of the same Joshua that makes the Moa. (I too found that disappointing).
Our local New World has been selling all sorts of interesting ales (like the Epic, La Trappe, etc.) and just this weekend I bought some Mata, which was quite palatable. Made in Kawerau of all places. I also bought some Leffe which was nearly as good as the La Trappe, but cheaper.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....
