    Yep. Ditch W2000.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

reinstall W2000, it should put the basics right. Don't do a total install, but during the install process there is a repair option - choose that

Most probably what has happened is he has lost his desktop settings folder (Win2k has annoying way of doing this ). Possible solution is login as an administrator on the machine, and in the Document & Settings folder (Most probably on C there should be 1 folder with the name of the user and another maybe with user.bak or something, browse through this folder and check which of this is the one u want. Before you start make a copy of this folder (For backup . Now copy all the sub folders of the one that you want into the other folder with the user name in it and give it a try.

BTW Dont me if it doesnt work ....

Yeah this sounds like the best place to start.

It does sound like the computer is working correctly just lost the users profile. If the above doesn't help maybe expand on what 'basically reset it self' means.

I had W2000...after 3 major crashes in 6 months (where a critical line or two of registry instruction just 'disappeared') I went to XP and have never had another issue.

It's a bit hard to say without more details.
    1) What OS? Win2000, WinXp etc

    2) What happens when you try to play something? ie do you get an error or does it look like everything is working fine just not produce any sound.

    3) I presume you have checked that the volume controls are turned up and not muted?

Hope that helps. Unfortunetly it's not the easiest thing to help with without actually seeing the computer.

Id start by hitting softly around the ears, slowly moving up to belting the soles of his bare feet with a rubber pipe.

Remember not to leave any bruisers - CYF's can be a bitch.

    I second dhunt 's opinion.
And also if you could let us know what Laptop it is , we could help further. If I hazard a guess he may have uninstalled the Audio driver along with the clean up .
