Thinking about becoming a fireman - anyone already one?

    Hey all

The next recruitment drive is happening in a few months and i am thinking about being a part of it. Any firefighters able to spare some time for a chat? Anyone had a go at becoming one?

    Cheers

After watching one of the supervisors at work rush off to a callout yesterday it was inspiring and i did sit there and think about doing it, i don't have the build for it unfortunately, nor could i get it.

The only reason I only ride in the Iron man Class is I have no friends left to enter the two man events,
    my own fault really.

i know lots of firemen in Dunedin, it helps if you have a trade background because then you can join the fire service construction crew on your days off so you do your two day shifts and two night shifts, then on your four days off you work for cash then when your back at work (consists mainly of driving around Nth Dn looking at scantily clad uni girls) you can moan to your co-firemen that you dont get paid enough

Hmmmm. I don't have a trade background. I have a Masters degree and a career in the business world that is boring and unmeaningful i.e. helping corporates save or earn more money. I need excitement and a little more purpose in my chosen career if I am too keep sane (and working).

I use to be a part time, on call firefighter when I lived in Mayfield... It has it moments, we would get called out to many road accidents as well... that part is the eye opener...

I did twenty years as a fireman back in the UK and it was a mixed bag. Certain aspects are fantastic,It can be the best job in the world but there is a down side, as witnessed recently just out side Hamilton, Plus a certain amount of baggage is ever present in my life, it can be quite be quite traumatic and dangerous.

Would I do it now if I could? No those days have gone. Would I do it again if I had my time over? Absobloominlutely.

A full time fireman in a big city is an amazing career , Done by amazing selfless people. If you can be mentally and physically tough and are good at taking the piss and making curries, it could be the best move you ever make.

    Good luck mate.

I have mates and family in the fire service (sis is a voly, not full time). Yeah get a trade first as your going to have a fair bit of time and energy left to get other work done. Firemen are great for pub quizes as they get to watch so much daytime TV and DVDs and Sky that they get to know alot of stuff.

They do an important and differcult job under differcult circumstances. But as a mate in the service says its a full time position without the full time work.

I have been thinking of posting a similar thread, because I'm pretty keen on this too. Not sure if I've got the build tho, quite a small chap, but I can hold my own.
is it hard for smaller dudes to get in?

My brother-in-law is a firefighter in Palmerston North (and also fire chief of the volunteers in Otaki) and he's just headed off to Canada for a year on an exchange visit with a Canadian firefighter. He seems to enjoy the work and he's travelled overseas to firefighters games many times.

Maybe join as a volunteer first to see if you like the job.

Oh, and when I worked on a newspaper in Wellington, I'd regularly call into the fire stations to see what was happening. Firefighters are GREAT cooks and there was one guy in Johnsonville who made THE best scones in the world!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
