Slow Street Magic problems: 50kmh max

hey i just bought a street magic after reading heaps on them and deciding they looked like fun as well as transport. problem is it wont break 50kph.
iv taken the exhaust off and heated it with the gas and burned out the gunk, adjusted the needle, stripped the carb and cleaned it and also replaced the plug.....all with no sucess. the best way i can describe it would be almost a rev limit feel where it hits round 50k and still has throttle to spare but wont go any quicker and almost vibrates???
i took the belt cover off, perhaps its stretched i dont know how loose it should be tho, i can move it round without the pulley moving.
    any ideas please

does it get to 50 pretty quick? the weights (or whatever they are called) can be changed in the clutch thing to give you quicker acceleration and a lower topend speed, or vise versa.

mine got to 65 - 70, but wasnt as quick off the mark as my mates that only got to 50 - 60.

its hard to gauge really because i havnt seen one around to compare to. its good off the line i think but im only 68kg so that helps. the bike looks pretty standard so i guess the weights are also

All vehicles that are, and have been for a few years, sold as mopeds in NZ are (are supposed to be) effectively limited to 50km/h by limiting the power output with the likes of a rev limiter.

Normally this can be removed with the snip of a wire.

Anyone know if street magics are restricted or how its done?

id be keen to hear from owners of these from new to find out if they went over 50 out of the box or as you say a small snip of a limit wire here and there

I hate to sound like an ad here but give the boys up at scootling a call. They deal with this stuff every day and will be able to tell ya whats what. I have a feeling they did have a top speed restriction on them... couldn't tell you where to look though.

just feel a bit stink about phoning them to ask for help when il be doing the work myself, if i was in auckland id just save the hassle and drop it off there but im at the other end of the country. bought a belt from the suzuki agent today so il fit it tomorrow and if it all goes well il get onto the guys at scootling and order some weights and see what i can do with it.

    hey sud,

I had the same problem with my street magic II. What happened with mine was that after the engine there is that big fat expansion chamber, and its fill with this corrugated steel stuff. And what happend is the corrugated stuff had broken off and its getting stuck in the exhaust pipe and stops the engine breathing.

To see if its the same problem take the exhause off from the engine and take it for a drive and see if that makes it better (make sure no cops around its very loud) , if it does maike it better u know its the exhaust. Also when u whip the exhaust off give it a shake see if theres a rattle.

    Hope that works

cheers for the suggestion, tried that as well and its all pretty good. i fitted the new belt this morning and made some new sleeves to go over the weights as they had big flat spots on them. now goes approx 65kph so looks like the belt was the fault. pretty easy repair for the home mechanic to tackle

Sounds like the rollers were at fault with the flat spots you describe. Change these as soon as possible for some new ones rather then doctor the old worn ones. Maybe get a lighter set as well to compare any speed differences.

But don't be shy, Andreas at Scootling will be able to help you out and supply the right parts to make you go faster... There may even be something on the website for you to read about...

the belt was heaps wider than my worn one, maybe a couple or three mm. i pushed the old sleeves off the weights and made some new ones out of acetal so they should be just as good as any after market part, next time i have it open il drill the centres out a bit more to lighten them as i didnt want to get ahead of myself when i was just trying to fix my first problem. the suzuki genuine parts were $20 per unit so i went with the fix mine option first. anyone tried this before and had any sucess or failures?
