Rear shock for my ZZR 400

I've been quoted $350 to rebuild the rear shock on my ZZR 400

Being the only one I've ever ridden I don't know what the handling is supposed to be like, at the moment it's a bit crap.
The tyres are shot and I expect a new set will help the handling a lot.

How good is the stock suspension, from what I hear, a bit soft and mushy.

Any ZZR 400/ 600 / 1100 riders have recommendations on aftermarket shocks.
Also are there any compatible shocks from other bikes that I might be able to get a good deal on. I see quite a few near new bits on trademe from people that have upgraded their suspension.
The aim is to not spend too much money, otherwise I'd just but a newer bike.

Mostly the bike will be used for commuting but there will be some enthusiastic weekend riding in the future (a mate just bought a ZX10 and keeps inviting me out for a ride).

IMHO $350 seems a pretty fair price for a rebuild and I doubt you will be able to pick anything that will be better for that money

For the record Qkkid was in my bed, not the other way round

That price does concur with what it would typically cost to rebuild such a shock. I cannot recall if they have an alloy body or not, if they do it could well be badly bellmouthed midstroke in which case the shock is effectively throwaway. Also if the shaft is pitted ( even minutely ) a new one will have to be made otherwise it will destroy seals and leak in short order.

    Cheers guys

While cost is a concern I'd also rather spend a little extra if it will benefit the handling.

The plan is to hang on to the bike for a little while so if a new shock will last the distance it would be a worthwhile investment.

Been reading some ZZR forums overseas and the Hagon replacement seems to rate well.
Guess you never know till you try.

The only comment I will 'diplomatically '' make is are the reports from areas that have a higher percentage of smooth roads than what we have? It is often neccessary to read between the lines...........or the bumps!
