Thanks guys. Mrs Oakie and I have been having a running battle on this subject for years. Unfortunately, it seems like I lost and need to apologise.

"SORRY MRS OAKIE. I'll buy you tea tonight and I guess I'll practice doing the washing properly tomorrow"

And I can't believe I found the answer in a bikers' forum. (Not that I was looking for an answer as I was sure I was right. Ho hum).

Well I stand by my statement. If I put the washing powder in the middle bit of my washing machine, my clothes would get washed in water and rinsed in washing powder.
Actually, we haven't heard back from the TS about how his 'wash' went. I bet he's wishing he never asked us!

The irony is my washing machine is a front loader and I pull out a small drawer which has 3 compartments in.... One for pre-soak, one for laundry powder and one for fabric softener! So, I'll just now for fear I really confuse him!

I have just seen the thread title and thought, naaaaaaa cant be, can it?
So I opened it to have a look and yes, its about laundry!
Mind you, I have been forcing my gear down the tube thing in the middle for years, so it has helped me at least. Now it wont take three days to do a load.
