Good luck sorting somthing out, don't turn your back on the place completely, you might be able to contract back to them at a much higher rate.
Having subbies instead of staff seems to be the flavour again.
Well I know some guys will not nove to new location so not all lost. My Boss who contracts said don't give up yet.

Just need a job to pay bills so flexible and these days we cannot be too fussy eh?

Seeing an agency today, sent applications to 3 jobs, one a new role at current place...I am in a state of mind where I will learn any job as I find Admin / Customer service enjoyable.

Being made redundant in March this year was the best thing that ever happened to me. I have gone back contracting, calling my own hours and rate of pay. Without any form of advertising I am getting calls from people asking me to come and do some work for them. Chin up Graham, it has been my experience that change while scarey is actually a good thing, you will look back in a few months time and think "I am really glad that happened"

    Good luck with it!

Shit. You wouldn't want to fuck up doing that job.

Ive changed jobs more times than I care to remember, mostly for reasons beyond my controll, though I work in the Trades, Fitter Welder, this is how I find new work / job.
Spend a day updating my C.V, get out the yellow pages for where I want to work, ie Wellington region, look at the section where I would like to work, ie Engineering, go through this section of the yellow pages and see wich companies I know I dont want to work for, put a mark beside those companies, start from the "A" and pone the first 10 companies, ask them if they are hiring or looking for some one, if not is it worth sending them a copy of my C.V.
I write down each company that shows interest, and what im going to do and name of manager or owner that i have spoken to, I try to angle for a face to face meeting, this will give me a chance to check out their work shop, and if I would want to work for them.
with in the first 30 companies I contact normaly I will get about 3 to 4 interviews, one of them normaly will be a job offer.
I find agencies to much hard work for the little they pay, and to much mucking around with empty prommises of good work, some agencies also want the equivelant of up to 3 months sallery to fill a full time position with an employer, from the employer. so most small companies dont bother with agencies.

As long as you get through it every downer makes you stronger.

    Longer legs for longer strides.

I'm currently unemployed(able) too, but am able to f**** off to sth america in a few weeks time. You could well argue that not being able to do that is a good thing in your instance.

    Best of luck GMB.

Happened to me before. Ended up getting a much better job.
Hang in there and remember to stash one of your good luck anchovies under your seat at work. It'll take them at least a month to figure out you left it.

I'm contract and I don't need a pimp either. They want far too big a cut for doing fuck all - they're little better than leeches IMHO. I've worked through an agent once and that was more than enough - inept pricks - but I know of guys who do today. God only knows why.

When i took on the contract I'm currently on, the difference between what the client was willing to pay and what the agency SAID the client was willing to pay was $20p/h. Luckily, one of my best friends worked for the client so I talked to them direct.

According to my timesheet, I've worked a total of 585 hours so far on this contract. For the agent concerned, he would have earned (so far) $11700 for me having called him to answer an ad placed on Seek, and for him having emailed it to the client. Fuck that!

Graham, I'm sure you'll find something relatively quickly, but don't discount contract work. It's easier to set your own flexible working hours, the pay's often better and if you get a decent accountant, you can often end up paying less tax overall by writing off some expenses and purchases as business-related.

Best of luck GB, have been in the same position and it does make you re-evaluate your priorities!
Something will come up for you, even if it is at a lower rate, take it anyways and work up from there and also keep on sending out CVs too - somewhere someone needs your expertise!

    Take care dude
